SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the perceived lack of excitement in upper-division Electromagnetism (EM) and Quantum Mechanics (QM) courses compared to Landau's books. Participants note that the repetitive nature of coursework may be necessary to ensure all students have a solid grasp of foundational concepts. While some find the classes boring, others suggest that the curriculum is tailored for students who may struggle with the basics. A specific critique of Landau's quantum mechanics text indicates it does not stand out compared to other resources.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of foundational physics concepts in Electromagnetism and Quantum Mechanics.
  • Familiarity with Landau's mechanics and its pedagogical approach.
  • Ability to engage with advanced physics coursework and assignments.
  • Awareness of different teaching methodologies in physics education.
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore Landau's mechanics for insights into effective physics teaching methods.
  • Research alternative Quantum Mechanics textbooks for varied pedagogical approaches.
  • Investigate the curriculum design of upper-division physics courses to understand pacing and content delivery.
  • Examine student engagement strategies in physics education to enhance interest in coursework.
USEFUL FOR

Students in upper-division physics courses, educators seeking to improve course engagement, and anyone interested in the pedagogical differences between traditional textbooks and modern teaching methods.

why are the physics classes so boring?
I am taking some upper devision EM,QM classes. they just keep repeating everything I have learned in the previous few years.
can't they jump straight to the fun part like in Landau?

Welcome to PF;
There is no way to tell why you find your classes boring - you indicate that they are repetitive, but I am sure you find other repetitive activities interesting. It is likely that the coursework is designed for students other than you, who may have a shakier grasp of the foundations.
You should be finding tests and assignments easy - which is a bonus.
If you have just started out - you'll probably find they get into the fun stuff once they are sure everyone is on the same page.

My prof told me that Landau's every books is good, except quantum mechanics - it is nothing really outstanding from other text. (Personally I have only read Landau's mechanics.)
