SUMMARY

Stephen Hawking famously placed a bet against the existence of the Higgs boson, a fundamental particle integral to the Standard Model of particle physics. The bet amount was reportedly around $1.98, suggesting it was more of a jest than a serious wager. Despite the Standard Model's success, including its inability to accurately predict vacuum energy, no experiments have definitively disproven it. This discussion highlights the playful nature of scientific discourse, as exemplified by Hawking's betting history.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Standard Model of particle physics
  • Familiarity with the Higgs boson and its significance
  • Basic knowledge of scientific betting and wagers
  • Awareness of vacuum energy concepts
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the implications of the Higgs boson on the Standard Model
  • Explore the concept of vacuum energy in modern physics
  • Investigate other notable scientific wagers and their outcomes
  • Study the experimental evidence supporting the existence of the Higgs boson
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, science enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the interplay of humor and serious discourse in scientific debates.

Seeing as it was so integral to the standard model and since the SM is so remarkably successful, aside from its inability to predict the correct amount of vacuum energy, and seeing as no experiment has proved it wrong, why did Hawking bet against it? It was only a 100 dollars so maybe he was just joking.

I heard it was something like $1.98, not $100, which supports the idea that it was a joke.
