Why humans have genetic material from both apes and pigs?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the possibility of genetic connections between pigs, monkeys, and humans. It addresses the claim that humans share material with pigs, questioning whether pigs and monkeys can breed and if there was a historical crossbreeding of genetic material. The consensus is that humans, pigs, and monkeys share a common ancestor, which is a fundamental concept in evolutionary biology. This shared ancestry does not imply hybridization but rather highlights the interconnectedness of all life on Earth through common descent.

I read in some article that we have material from pigs too. 1) Is that possible? Can pigs and monkeys breed? 2) Is there any possibility "someone" in a far away past crossbreed-ed genetic material of both apes and pigs? Are we a hybrid?

No. This just implies that: humans, pigs and monkeys have a common ancestor. There is nothing particularly special about this fact; all life on Earth has a common ancestor.

I am reading Nicholas Wade's book A Troublesome Inheritance. Please let's not make this thread a critique about the merits or demerits of the book. This thread is my attempt to understanding the evidence that Natural Selection in the human genome was recent and regional. On Page 103 of A Troublesome Inheritance, Wade writes the following: "The regional nature of selection was first made evident in a genomewide scan undertaken by Jonathan Pritchard, a population geneticist at the...
