Why Isn't a Lone Proton Considered a Magnetic Monopole?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the question of why a lone proton is not classified as a magnetic monopole. It explores concepts related to magnetic and electric monopoles, as well as the magnetic properties of protons.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions why a lone proton is not considered a monopole.
  • Another participant clarifies that a proton is an electric monopole, not a magnetic one.
  • A subsequent post reiterates that a proton is an electric monopole and questions whether protons repel magnetically.
  • Another participant explains that protons are magnetic dipoles, and their interactions depend on their relative orientation, similar to macroscopic magnets.
  • One participant expresses understanding after the explanation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the classification of protons as electric monopoles and magnetic dipoles, but there is some uncertainty regarding the nature of magnetic interactions.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the complexities of magnetic interactions or the definitions of monopoles, leaving some assumptions and conditions unaddressed.

Simple question. Why isn't a lone proton with no electrons considered a monopole?

And protons repel magnetically?

Protons are magnetic dipoles. Whether they repel or attract due to the dipole moment depends on their relative orientation, just as for macroscopic magnets.

Ok that makes sense now. Thank you!
