SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a senior Electrical Engineering student from Wright State University seeking admission to the University of Kentucky for a master's degree in power systems and power generation. The student has an overall GPA of 3.01, a GPA of 3.43 from Wright State, and a 3.57 in Electrical Engineering. The student plans to take the GRE, aiming to exceed the University of Kentucky's requirement of 1100 to enhance their admission prospects. The consensus indicates that while the GPA is on the lower side, strong GRE scores could significantly improve the chances of acceptance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of graduate school admission requirements
  • Familiarity with GRE scoring and its impact on applications
  • Knowledge of GPA calculation and its significance in academic applications
  • Awareness of specific programs in Electrical Engineering, particularly in power systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the University of Kentucky's Electrical Engineering graduate program specifics
  • Prepare for the GRE with a focus on achieving a score significantly above 1100
  • Explore strategies for improving study habits and academic performance
  • Investigate other universities with strong power systems programs as alternatives
USEFUL FOR

Prospective graduate students in Electrical Engineering, particularly those interested in power systems, as well as academic advisors and admissions counselors evaluating GPA and GRE implications for graduate school applications.

Hello all,

I'm a senior Electrical Engineering student at Wright State University in OH and I'll be graduating in March 2011 with my BSEE degree.

I've come to the conclusion that my main area of passion and interest is in power systems and power generation so I'd like to do a masters degree focusing on that, which they don't really have at Wright State - so I'll need to go elsewhere.

My stats:

3.01 for all undergrad (I had some poor study habits at a prior Univ.)
3.43 Wright State
3.57 Electrical Engineering

I've been doing some research on grad schools an the school I think might be my best fit is the University of Kentucky. They have a wonderful power program and I think I might have a more realistic shot of getting into UK than Ohio State, which I was originally thinking of pursuing.

My main question is: Are my stats good enough to get into a school like UK? I plan to take the GRE soon and I'm hoping that doing well on that will boost my chances as well. UK only requires an 1100 GRE so I'm hoping to surpass that by quite a bit. Not a guarantee of course, but I certainly hope I can.

Do I have a chance?

Thanks in advance!
