Wondering if there are any construction contractors on PF (looking for opinions)

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the feasibility of extending an existing garage versus building a secondary garage for an older home. Key considerations include property line proximity, zoning regulations, roof slope issues, and necessary modifications to existing structures such as trusses and footings. Participants suggest that adding a second story to the garage with car elevators may be a more practical solution than extending the garage width. The use of parking lifts from McKinley Elevator is recommended for maximizing space.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of zoning regulations related to property lines
  • Knowledge of structural modifications, including roof trusses and footings
  • Familiarity with garage design and construction techniques
  • Awareness of parking lift systems, such as those offered by McKinley Elevator
NEXT STEPS
  • Research local zoning laws and property line regulations
  • Investigate structural engineering principles for modifying existing garages
  • Explore options for garage lifts and their installation
  • Consider the design and benefits of building a second story on garages
USEFUL FOR

Homebuyers, contractors, architects, and anyone involved in residential construction or renovation projects, particularly those considering garage modifications.

Hey everyone I am looking at an older home to buy and wondering how much of a pain in the butt it would be to extend the garage out wider vs just building a secondary garage? Attached is a picture for reference

Indeed.
OP, your garages are up against that fence. Is that the edge of your property?
Nobody's going to be able to tell you anything until you explain what we're looking at.
