Work Function of Silver: Solve Problem 18 for eV

Click For Summary
The work function of silver is calculated using the formula work function = threshold frequency * Planck's constant. Given a threshold frequency of 14.3*10^15 Hz, the calculation involves converting Planck's constant to eV. After performing the calculations, the work function is determined to be approximately 59.148 eV. This value is derived from multiplying the threshold frequency by the converted Planck's constant. Thus, the work function of silver is confirmed as 59.148 eV.

Problem 18.
The threshold frequency of silver is 14.3*10^15Hz.
What is the work function of silver? Answer in eV.

I figured it out.

work function=threshold frequency * h
=14.3*10^15Hz * 4.14*10^-15
= 59.202

To solve this problem, we can use the formula: work function = Planck's constant * threshold frequency.

First, we need to convert the threshold frequency from Hz to s^-1 by dividing it by 1 second. This gives us 14.3*10^15 s^-1.

Next, we need to convert Planck's constant from J*s to eV*s by dividing it by the conversion factor 1.602*10^-19 eV/J. This gives us a value of 4.136*10^-15 eV*s.

Now, we can plug in these values into the formula: work function = 4.136*10^-15 eV*s * 14.3*10^15 s^-1.

Simplifying, we get a work function of 59.148 eV. Therefore, the work function of silver is 59.148 eV.

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
