SUMMARY

When updating a CV, it is crucial to specify both the make and model of equipment, such as a custom-built SVTA Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system, to highlight relevant experience. Employers are more interested in the depth of experience, such as designing and modifying high-tech devices, rather than just routine usage. Given that initial application filters are often non-technical, providing clear and detailed descriptions increases the chances of passing through these gatekeepers.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of CV formatting and best practices
  • Familiarity with technical equipment terminology
  • Knowledge of the Molecular Beam Epitaxy process
  • Awareness of the hiring process and gatekeeping roles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research effective CV strategies for technical roles
  • Learn how to articulate technical experience for non-technical audiences
  • Explore best practices for listing specialized equipment in resumes
  • Investigate the significance of custom-built systems in technical job applications
USEFUL FOR

Job seekers in technical fields, particularly those in engineering or research roles, who need to effectively communicate their equipment experience on their CVs.

I am currently in the process of updating my CV. When listing the various equipment I have worked with, should I list the make/model etc.? For example, I have worked with a Molecular Beam Epitaxy system. Should I list, I have 5 years experience working with a custom-built SVTA MBE system, or just list I have 5 years experience working with MBE? What is convention in something like this? Thanks for the advice.

Tell the recipients as much as they need to know, in words they can understand.

Example: an employer might be very interestied in whether you have spent 5 years designing and modifying some custom built high tech device, as compared with just using it in a routine fashion. But they might not have any idea what an SVTA MBE system is, unless you spell out the acronyms.

The gatekeepers who do the first pass filtering of applications are probably not techincal experts, and they don't have time to look up stuff that they don't understand. But if you don't get past them, your application will be in the reject pile.

For some background, I'm currently a 3rd year physics major with an astro specialization studying in Canada, and as undergraduates are want to do I'm regularly evaluating my career prospects down the road. I also plan on pursuing grad school when I've completed my degree. It might just be my anxiety acting up a little, but with a lot of the government funding drying up for public science research broadly in the US, the 'industry' everyone keeps talking about when questions like this are...
