I think by 10cm, he means that the size of universe at the time of big bang i.e. if everything in the universe was tightly packed and compressed into one ball, it'd be a 10cm ball... Balls!

The only vertical force on it might not be just m1g. Depending on the structure of the chain, the hanging chain will also transmit some tangential force (tangential to the cross section of the chain) apart from the axial force. And this tangential force will add to the vertical force on m1...
This is a very basic problem which you all must have seen somewhere. But recently an itching doubt has come up to me regarding this problem.
Problem:
A chain lies on a table with some part of it hanging over the edge. Now if the coefficient of friction is μ, then find out the maximum part...
Thanks for the reply. That cleared up some confusion. I also found some long discussion here: https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=313396. This thread poses the same question as my confusion.
Hence, I'd like to quote the above mentioned thread and answer the question posted in above...
I just have this confusion which is completely eating me up. They say entropy of a system is a state property. Then they say that for a completely isolated system, entropy either increases or remains zero depending on the process being irreversible or reversible.
So, let's say for an...
