Combined translational and rotational motion of a rigid body

The short answer to your question is that v=rω makes some assumptions about your frame of reference, specifically that it's not rotating and that is isn't moving with respect to the CoM. If the body is moving or the FoR is rotating, you have to adjust accordingly.

Behavior of a capacitor with varying capacitance

The question was if my understanding of how the plates would behave was correct; it was not, and as such we have moved on to me trying to figure out what *IS* correct. I'm currently thinking about if the final values of voltage and stored energy depend on how I change the capacitance rather...

    How to charge a mobile phone (5v500mAh) from 6v 1300mAh Ni-Mh battery

I'd have to re-read everything, but I think it's because you initially defended that statement and never clearly conceded the point. I think this comic nails it. IMO the USB talk was a bit of a derail, but regardless of that, I don't think there was every anyone saying a 5V regulator wouldn't...

Behavior of a capacitor with varying capacitance

First one: Am I correct in saying that the answer to my question depends on *how* I change the capacitance? IE: Plate distance/plate area/dielectric constant? That energy and voltage are determined by the specifics of the parameters determining capacitance? I hadn't initially realized...

    How to charge a mobile phone (5v500mAh) from 6v 1300mAh Ni-Mh battery

It sounds to me like you two agreed on the topic of the thread and are now off on a tangent. If I'm following the conversation, then: "Generic USB Charger" == 5V between power and ground pins, maybe the two data pins are shorted, and it doesn't catch fire or otherwise fail when you use it. If...

Behavior of a capacitor with varying capacitance

Ah, that makes more sense. I was trying figure it out in my head but it's apparent I don't remember some of these equations well enough. It makes sense thinking about it though. Work is done when the plates move in the plate separation changing version; I chose that as my example because of...

Behavior of a capacitor with varying capacitance

The wiki article does have some useful information, yes, but doesn't really answer the question unless I missed a section. Put more clearly, what happens to the energy already in the capacitor when you change the capacitance *after* charging it. There's obviously quite a few ways to create...

Behavior of a capacitor with varying capacitance

There was a thread a while ago regarding a capacitor where the capacitance was changed while it was part of a circuit. I won't link the thread here as it was kind of a train wreck... Now the explanation given was that in order to change the capacitance work would have to be done to cause...

    How can space itself move/expand

That line in particular is of interest to me; it's something that has become more and more prominent as I've learned more in the sciences: very very few problems have an exact mathematical solution. May or may not be too much into the metaphysics side of things to discuss here, but it's one of...

    How can space itself move/expand

It's unfortunate in that many who read an article on the internet suddenly feels they're an expert on the topic in question, and certainly makes it hard to track down reliable info. It's also one of the fields that people come into with *very* strong opinions on, and are frequently less than...

    How to charge a mobile phone (5v500mAh) from 6v 1300mAh Ni-Mh battery

Sounds like you know the specification off the top of your head. I know that the device requesting the power has to request it from the source through the data connection, but is there anything special that the receiving device needs to know about how much power it's receiving? I've seen...

    How can space itself move/expand

Indeed. It all makes sense when you follow the observations to their logical conclusions. Even though the answer one ends up with isn't what they would expect setting out, that doesn't make it wrong. QM is even more like that it seems. You start from some observations and experiments that...

    How to charge a mobile phone (5v500mAh) from 6v 1300mAh Ni-Mh battery

Phones can definitely deal with chargers that don't meet the USB specification; in USB there's actual communication that goes on where the slave device requests an amount of power from the master end. Many chargers don't care and are happy to cram 2A into the phone(way more than USB allows)...

    How can space itself move/expand

Ah, those articles help considerably. It's not what I'd call intuitive, but what is these days? Thanks.

    How can space itself move/expand

How can space itself "move/expand" Frequently in cosmology and sometimes in other fields you hear talk of the universe expanding of contracting. I think we finally settled on that it is expanding. I'm having a little trouble grasping that - space itself/the geometry of space is changing with...
