Homework Statement
Hello, I have some Calculus problems from my latest homework.
1.
The limit as x approaches 3 of sqrt(x+1)
The back of the book says 2. But I'm wondering why it exists as sqrt(3+1) = sqrt(4) = +-2, so since there are 2 values for this, should the limit even exist...
Homework Statement
This is one step of a larger problem, but I'm stuck on derivative of 1/x.
Homework Equations
The Attempt at a Solution
1/x = x^-1.
Using power rule:
-x^-2
but this isn't right?
Homework Statement
use definition of derivitiave to find f'(c) EXACTLY
x3 - 4x2 + x + 8, c=1
Homework Equations
lim x->c f(x)-f(c) / x-c
The Attempt at a Solution
I got as far as (x3 - 4x2 +x + 2) - 6 / x-1
Plugging in 1 for x gives me divided by zero. The teacher's example...
Homework Statement
How many ways can a 5-member committee be chosen from a class with34 students?
Homework Equations
The Attempt at a Solution
Using the formula from the book, I did 34! / (34-5)! and I got 33,390,720.
This gives me the same answer as doing 34*33*32*31*30, but...
Homework Statement
:mad::mad::mad:Find two functions defined implicitly by the relation 9y^2=x^2
9y^{2}=x^{2}
2. Find three ordered pairs in the relation xy=12
The Attempt at a Solution
1. my attempt is f(x)= \sqrt{9y^{2}}
and
f(y)=\sqrt{\frac{x^{2}}{9}}
So...is this...
Homework Statement
Find two functions f and g such that (f+g)(x) =5 and the domain of f+g is [0,inf)
Homework Equations
The Attempt at a Solution
I am wondering if (f+g)(x) means f(x)+g(x)
If so then can i just say that f(x)=4 and g(x)=1 or f(x)=3 and g(x)=2?
Homework Statement
We were reading about lightning and how the cloud has a different charge than the ground. We know that lightning happens because of induction. But if the charges are different, why doesn't the Earth pull the cloud to the ground, or repel it higher into the air...
Homework Statement
log base 5 cube root 25 equals what?
Homework Equations
I know that the answer is 2/3 because it is in the back of the book
The Attempt at a Solution
log base 5 = 25 to the 1/3
so 5 to the what = 25 to the 1/3
How do I get 5 to the 2/3 equals 25 to the...
the directions are: determine whether each expression is a polynomial.:rolleyes:
i got the easyones like: 12x3-2x2+0.5 is a polynomial
but i can't figure these out:
(x3/11)+(x2/8)
I don't know if the variables can be fractions but i think this could be this:
1/11x3+1/8 x2 so i think...
