Is the future of our country worth investing in?

Voting isn't free of course. It costs you the cost of transportation to get to the voting booth and back, as well as the time you have to take out of your day to do it. Not to mention, in the broader sense, the opportunity cost of contributing your time and attention to the political process in...

Is the future of our country worth investing in?

Isn't this a bit like saying: "don't worry about voting for your candidate. He'll get the bulk of his votes from other people." It seems like in general, whatever logic you could use to exhort someone to vote, you could likewise use to exhort them to donate money to the preferred candidate...

Can I Create a Waving Cilium Sequence with Software?

If you think you can model the dynamics mathematically, and if you have access to Matlab, then you could draw the frames for the basic animation using http://psychtoolbox.org/wikka.php?wakka=HomePage and copy them to images on disk for further editing.

Bad Science - Washing the numbers, selling the model

It's not about the efficacy of the drugs but rather the truth of the chemical imbalance hypothesis. If the hypothesis is false this doesn't preclude SSRIs from being effective.

Left or Right brain visual test

I think the technical term you're searching for is "bullsh*t." How about this one: http://www.healthyeyes.org.uk/uploads/pics/necker_cube.gif If you see the yellow side facing outward, you're left-brained. If it's inward, you're right-brained. If it switches, you have a brain tumor.

Thoughts on Jackson Pollock and Modern Art

But a good definition of a phenomenon can't just be a collection of necessary conditions. To be a worthwhile definition it needs sufficient conditions. To be a good artist, one needs a working heart and lungs, among other things. These are necessary conditions for being a good artist. But they...

Thoughts on Jackson Pollock and Modern Art

While knowing the context can boost one's appreciation for any piece of art, knowing the context should not be a necessary condition for appreciation. If it is, then the art belongs in a book where it is presented in an integrated fashion with that context, rather than hanging barely on a museum...

Thoughts on Jackson Pollock and Modern Art

I think they just mean the level of fine detail. The general idea is that if a picture follows a 1/f power distribution, most of the picture is composed of lower frequency (lower detail) stuff and the more refined, detailed stuff comprises relatively less of the overall picture.
