Other How to choose between two labs I like for my dissertation?

I'm a first year PhD student and the program I'm in requires three laboratory rotations. I have finished those and all three of the PI's explicitly said they want me to join their lab. I would consider joining 2/3 of them. I really like both PI's and the work they do (and the work they would let...

Admissions PhD Interviews: Questions, Tips & Advice to Ease Nerves

US. This is for PhD in some sort of biology related field, be it biochemistry, molecular bio, bioinformatics. Do physics programs not have interviews? I was just under the impression that pretty much all programs did. At any rate, I've been doing plenty of reading and such and am going to...

Admissions PhD Interviews: Questions, Tips & Advice to Ease Nerves

I managed to get a bunch of interviews. I'm nervous. What kinds of question should I expect? Are they going to try to quiz me on things? If I don't know who's interviewing me and I can't read their papers, what do I do if I'm unfamiliar with their field/specific project? What kinds of...

Instrument Design to Deliver Energy to 50mm Circle

I actually used to shoot with a bronica but I don't have it anymore. That's certainly an interesting idea and I bet it would work, the poor camera would be getting hit with 255nm light a lot though. Those shutter parts are nice as well. It's nice to know my options, but I'm beginning to think...

Instrument Design to Deliver Energy to 50mm Circle

I didn't know where to put this, I figured I'd start here since this area sees traffic that other areas might not see. Someone can move it if there's a better section for it. I'm thinking of an instrument design that has a light path as follows: UV-Vis light source, monochromator or filter that...

Do you guys have microscopes at home?

Sadly that Vickes scope was sold. And yes, I might be young compared to some on this board. I'm still trying to look around to get a handle on older microscopes. I'm still looking to not buy a new one from a brand like amscope.

Do you guys have microscopes at home?

Actually, do you know of anywhere online where you can find information about vickers scopes? I'm looking at an M008 photoplan and can't find a thing abut it other than some ebay auctions. Either that or an American optics 50-fifty, can't find much info on it either.

Do you guys have microscopes at home?

You can actually order a lot of stuff off amazon. Slides and covers shouldn't be hard to come buy. Further reading seems to show that methylene blue might be a bit harder than I thought to find. Apparently you might have a hard time finding it at a petco or petsmart but you can get it from...

Do you guys have microscopes at home?

I'm hoping to find something that can hold 5 objectives. I could even buy a base and the objectives and whatnot separately. Or buy all the parts that come separately and put the whole thing together... whatever keeps costs down. Looks like you can buy methylene blue from places that sell fish...

Do you guys have microscopes at home?

Yeah I was hoping to thrift or ebay a decent performing one. Obviously not going to be on par with what I'm used to but I'd like to look at some singe celled stuff, eukaryotic and prokaryotic. A 100x oil immersion objective would be cool I guess. I know how to make slides and culture stuff so...

Do you guys have microscopes at home?

I really want one but I'm not sure what to look for. I have lots of experience on normal compound and Nikon inverted compound scope for eukaryotic cell culture but I'm obviously not going to buy one of those for my house. It'd be nice If I could use a camera with it too. I don't want to have it...

Optical DIY inverted microscope out of a webcam

Gee, that looks dangerous fun. I found one of http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vickers-Instruments-M008-Photoplan-Microscope-/271705595573 on ebay but I'm not about to drop 350 for hobbies at home. It's so cool looking though. But considering I have a good amount of experience on microscopes it'd annoy...

Optical DIY inverted microscope out of a webcam

Not sure if this is the right place for this thread but, have you guys ever made anything cool at home? I was planning on making an inverted microscope out of a webcam by just taking the lens out and flipping it over and setting it up like a microscope.

Before you die, what do you want to see become a reality

Combining DMSO & Aromatherapy: Benefits & Effects

Not sure about aroma therapy, i mean, maybe it'd make a really long lasting perfume if you could then excrete the smell after it was absorbed? i'd pass on absorbing chemicals into my skin easily if I'm not sure how it'll affect me. I have heard of it being used for arthritis though. Not sure...
