Philosophy is not a subject, it is something you do!

What Is the Purpose of Asking Questions?

What relationship does a question have with reality? I think that is how early Wittgenstein would put it.

What Is the Purpose of Asking Questions?

Rhetorical questions do have an answer. It is the nature of a rhetorical question that the answer is implied in the way the question is formulated. I wouldn't classify a rhetorical question as a question, since it is not actually an inquiry into anything. It is a rhetorical device.

For you maths-people as I'm confused.

Ok, I apologise for making that comment. I found a proof, I'm convinced!

What Is the Purpose of Asking Questions?

Careful now... You shouldn't be using "asks" in any definition of a question. I think the most important thing to decide upon is whether a question necessarily requires an answer to have sense. Does the answer not need to be apparent, is it enough that it is conceivable that the...

Is All Motion Linked to the Big Bang?

What Zeno was criticising was the view that space is a continuum. In mathematical terms, he was criticising the view that space is complete. Zeno basically assumes two things: An infinite summation of objects of finite size will not converge; Any summation of objects of zero size will give...

Is All Motion Linked to the Big Bang?

You assume that your mathematics describes something physically real - you are assuming that real things move, which is precisely what we want to prove (or disprove). Of course, we may define motion purely mathematically, but that doesn't answer the physical question of how things move.

Actually, I don't think that's true. If you multiply your equation there through by 3, you'll see why.

Good expositions on quasiconformal mappings and Teichmuller spaces?

Well, from what I've encountered, it's concerned with Riemann surfaces and conformal mappings between Riemann surfaces. It seems to draw together a lot of areas of mathematics: classical complex analysis, Banach manifolds, discrete geometry, algebraic topology. No one at the university I'm...

    Is math based on observations?

EL, it seems to me that what you are claiming is that our logical axioms are based on our intuition. I totally agree with you. However, I don't think it would be practical to have it any other way. Neither do I think that it is problematic for the validity of logic. The axioms of logic are...

Measuring Beauty | Can Beauty be Quantified?

I didn't reply, basically because I don't have the time right now to reply in a manner which I would deem satisfactory. I am a serious musician (not professional, just serious) and I have done a lot of study on the philosophy of music. I will put forth a few views, and discuss their merits...
