Where Should I Move? Find a New Place to Live with These Guidelines

David, have you visited Portland, Maine? Rail service to Boston and NY is quite reliable and regular. There are lots of folks that work in Boston and live in Portland simply because of the rail service. If you visit Portland, ask your cabbie to take you to the Old Port, which is the southern...

Jalapenos I Grew: The Food Thread Part 2

My wife went to our local market today. Somehow, they had decided to put pork spare ribs on sale for $3.99/lb. They had some spare ribs left over from a special that ran last week @$2.99/lb, and my wife bought them all. Two huge bags of them loaded into our chest freezer. This summer's...

Where Were You Born? Lightning, Ooze, or a Thermal Vent?

I was born in a tiny hospital in Skowhegan, Maine. I don't know what that building is used for now. The current hospital is HUGE.

What is the oldest thing you have in your house?

I have some native American stone artifacts. Spear point and some arrowheads. They are tucked away in a sturdy safe - not that thieves would have any clue what they are.

Jalapenos I Grew: The Food Thread Part 2

Supper tonight was awesome! Our niece and her boyfriend rode their snowmobiles to a pond in northern Maine and spent a couple of days there ice-fishing. This afternoon, he dropped in and gave us a large brook trout they had caught. My wife got the oven going and baked some potatoes, and...

Jalapenos I Grew: The Food Thread Part 2

I learned a lot from my grandmother, She was the cook for the Kennebec Log Drive. KLD consisted of a lot of local workers that would saw the trees, dump the wood into local streams and rivers to float down to the pulp and paper mills, so there were a lot of guys that had to be fed really fast...

    Purchasing binoculars for stargazing advice

True, and remember that most "scientists" aren't astronomers. Simply placing a participant in a dark room and measuring their pupil diameters after a short time is a really poor approximation, at best. Amateur astronomers can shoot this chart down with ease. It takes me at least 20-30 minutes...

Insights Planning to buy a first telescope? - Comments

I have not had the opportunity to observe through any of those instruments, nor try out the mounts. Orion is quite a popular company, so if you join a local club, you may get to try some of these instruments and compare them to others. That is the best way to make your choice before you spend...

    What Makes Physics So Fascinating?

I like physics because ever since I was a young kid (I was born in 1952), I was interested in how things worked and what conditions might make the behavior of such things consistent or erratic. There was no library in our town, but there was a small one in the next town to the south (about a...

Project PF Proliferation - Free Gold Membership

I'm so happy to hear that. PF is a wonderful resource. I'm an old fart (if 60's is "old"), and I try to steer my young friends and relatives here so that they can get accustomed to dealing with PF members and be exposed to concepts that they won't encounter in our public schools.

    Craft Beers, Microbreweries and Homebrewing

For any beer-loving PF'ers that might travel to or from Canada next summer, you will likely be using Route 201. If so, stop in Skowhegan and take Route 2 East. Just before you get out of town, take the Oak Pond Road South to the Oak Pond Brewery for a tour. There are always 6 beers, ales, and...

News RIP Jack Bruce: Legendary Bassist Passes Away at 71

Bruce was incredible musician. I tried for years to play bass and sing, with poor results. Whenever I played guitar and sang, things just fell together. Bass and vocals never worked for me.

What Are Some Tips for Successful Gardening?

Those peppers look wonderful. I'd love to have them. The weather is cooling, so it's time to plant garlic for next season. I always wait until the soil is cool before planting garlic, then mulch heavily with straw. Garlic is very tough, so the crops are reliable.
