Hardly my invention : the principle is too obvious to be innovative. I'm not surprised it "doesn't work" : the proportions in the diagram are just for illustration : it probably binds right up, as is.

No idea for search terms, or I would have probably mentioned it. A bit disappointed that a quick search through those 500 gear-doohickeys didn't turn one up, though there might be some that I don't know how to search for.
