How did Newton discover law of gravitation

The law of gravitation states force between two point masses m and M is proportional to their product and inversely proportional to the square of distance between them.
So i'm just curious to know how did newton discover this law? What kind of experiments he did to derive this formula? I want a brief history of it, thank you
