In order to make a electromagnetic motor, we wrap a coil of wire around a core. But wouldn't the metal core conduct as well, so we end up short-circuiting the system?

So what is the purpose of the metal core?
An electromagnetic motor is a type of motor that uses the principles of electromagnetism to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. It consists of a coil of wire, called an armature, which is surrounded by a permanent magnet. When an electric current is passed through the coil, it creates a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, causing the armature to rotate.
Short-circuiting in an electromagnetic motor occurs when the current in the coil flows in a path other than through the armature. This can happen when the wires in the coil touch or when the insulation on the wires wears off, causing the current to bypass the armature and not produce the desired movement.
One way to overcome short-circuiting in an electromagnetic motor is to use thicker wires with better insulation to prevent the wires from touching. Another method is to use a commutator, which is a mechanical switch that reverses the direction of the current in the coil, ensuring that it always flows through the armature.
To make an electromagnetic motor, you will need a coil of wire, a permanent magnet, a battery or power source, and a switch or commutator. You may also need some basic tools, such as pliers and wire cutters, to assemble the motor.
Yes, when working with electricity, it is important to take proper safety precautions. Make sure to use a low-voltage power source, such as batteries, and avoid using high-voltage sources. Also, be sure to wear protective gear, such as safety glasses, and work in a well-ventilated area. If you are unsure about any step in the process, seek guidance from a trained professional.
