Engine on a chip - the millimeter size turbine

In summary, researchers at MIT have developed a millimeter size turbine engine that will become operational by the end of this summer. This new engine has the potential to create smaller and more powerful batteries, as well as tiny motors for various applications. In the future, it could even be used for clean and cost effective power plants. However, further work is needed on power takeoff and incorporating a free turbine design.

After a decade of work, the first millimeter size turbine engine developed by researchers at MIT should become operational by the end of this summer. The new turbine engine will allow the creation of smaller and more powerful batteries than anything currently in existence. It might also serve as the basis for tiny powerful motors with applications ranging from micro UAVs to children's toys. In the more distant future huge arrays of hydrogen fueled millimeter turbine engines could even be the basis for clean, quiet and cost effective power plants. [continued]

Would love to have one of these running my laptop.
Engine and fuel-tank only 5inches tall is really impressive!

Looks interesting. Still need to work on power takeoff. Perhaps some sort of free turbine?

1. What is an engine on a chip?

An engine on a chip refers to a miniature engine that is a few millimeters in size, designed to fit onto a microchip. It is a microscale version of a traditional engine, with all the necessary components and systems compressed into a tiny space.

2. How does a millimeter size turbine work?

A millimeter size turbine works by utilizing the same principles as a larger turbine. It has a rotor with blades that are turned by a moving fluid, such as air or water. The rotation of the blades then drives a shaft, which can be used to power other devices.

3. What are the potential applications of an engine on a chip?

An engine on a chip has numerous potential applications, such as powering miniature robots, sensors, and other small devices. It can also be used in medical devices, such as pacemakers, and in aerospace technology, such as small satellites and drones.

4. What are the advantages of a millimeter size turbine?

The main advantage of a millimeter size turbine is its small size, which allows it to be integrated into microchips and other small devices. It also has the potential for high efficiency and low cost, making it a promising technology for various industries.

5. What are the challenges in developing an engine on a chip?

Developing an engine on a chip presents several challenges, such as designing and manufacturing tiny components, ensuring the engine can withstand high temperatures and pressures, and finding suitable materials that can withstand harsh environments. Additionally, the integration of different systems and components into a small space can be a complex and delicate process.
