AI Thread Summary
To find the equation of a line with an undefined slope passing through (3, -4), the correct answer is x = 3, not y = -4. The standard equation of a circle with a radius of 4 and center (1, 2) is correctly given as (x-1)² + (y-2)² = 16, but the general form requires further manipulation. To convert the circle equation x² + y² + 4x - 2y - 20 = 0 into general form, completing the square is necessary to identify the center and radius. The discussion clarifies the distinction between standard and general forms of circle equations, emphasizing the importance of understanding their representations. Understanding these steps is crucial for solving similar math problems effectively.

1.) How do you answer this?
Find the equation of the line that has a slope undefined and passes through the points (3, -4).

I got y=-4
------------------------
2.) Write the standard and general equations of the circle with radius 4 and center (1,2).
I got STANDARD: (x-1)^2 + (y-2)^2=16
I don't understand the whole GENERAL FORM!
------------------------
3.) Then I have this: Give the center, radius, and all intercepts of the circle: x^2+y^2+4x-2y-20=0.
I am stuck on this one completely.

Thank you for all help!

1. What is the point-slope equation?

2. Correct.

3. Complete the square, put it in general form, which C(h,k) is the center.

General form just basically tells us where the center is, and the length of the radius. If I were to ask you the difference between y=x-1 & y=x+1. You would say the first is shifted a unit down, while the 2nd is shifted up a unit. Same thing for the circle. For example: (x-1)^2+(y-2)^2=4, shifted to the right 1 & up 2 with radius 2.

#1: You want a slope undefined. Your answer is a slope of zero. They are not the same.

#2: You obtained the correct equation in standard form, but you want the final answer in GENERAL form. Perform the steps (meaning, multiply!)

Crap! Sorry, I'm a dummy. General form is what they have in question 3. Standard form is C(h,k) form, hehe.

Suppose ,instead of the usual x,y coordinate system with an I basis vector along the x -axis and a corresponding j basis vector along the y-axis we instead have a different pair of basis vectors ,call them e and f along their respective axes. I have seen that this is an important subject in maths My question is what physical applications does such a model apply to? I am asking here because I have devoted quite a lot of time in the past to understanding convectors and the dual...
Insights auto threads is broken atm, so I'm manually creating these for new Insight articles. In Dirac’s Principles of Quantum Mechanics published in 1930 he introduced a “convenient notation” he referred to as a “delta function” which he treated as a continuum analog to the discrete Kronecker delta. The Kronecker delta is simply the indexed components of the identity operator in matrix algebra Source: https://www.physicsforums.com/insights/what-exactly-is-diracs-delta-function/ by...
