Is that OK to use cover letter template for Ph.D. application

AI Thread Summary
Using templates for Ph.D. application cover letters is acceptable as long as they are modified significantly to reflect personal experiences and unique qualities. While templates can provide a helpful structure, relying too heavily on them can lead to generic applications that fail to stand out. It's crucial to personalize the cover letter to capture the attention of the reviewer, as it may be the only aspect that prompts further consideration of the application. Additionally, applicants should ensure that their statement of purpose also allows for personalization to enhance their overall application.

Hi,

I saw many templates for the cover letter of Ph.D. application. If I use them and do a little modification, is that OK or regard as a kind of plagiarization?

Thank you very much in advance!

I'm only an undergraduate so maybe this advice doesn't apply, but it's what I have always been told when writing applications.

The person that will read your application will be reading lots and lots of applications from other people and sometimes the covering letter is the only reason that person takes a deeper look into the rest of your application. Looking at templates is a good way to see the typical structure and content of a covering letter but you must find a way to make yours stand out from the rest.

If everyone uses these templates and does a little modifying, you're not going to stand out.

Thanks a lot. The application requires another statement of purpose, hopefully there is still some room for personalization...

I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
Hi everyone! I'm a senior majoring in physics, math, and music, and I'm currently in the process applying for theoretical and computational biophysics (primarily thru physics departments) Ph.D. programs. I have a 4.0 from a basically unknown school in the American South, two REUs (T50 and T25) in computational biophysics and two semesters of research in optics (one purely experimental, one comp/exp) at my home institution (since there aren't any biophysics profs at my school), but no...
