This teacher has doubts that microwaved food is safe

In summary, the conversation discusses the speaker's concerns about a teacher's belief that microwaved food is dangerous without providing any evidence to support this claim. They also mention the issue of people holding irrational beliefs in certain areas while being rational in others. The conversation ends with a moderator closing the thread due to the discussion of pseudoscience.

What do you think?

Why would he think microwaved food would be dangerous? He doesn't really explain why...Most of the time that I heard microwaved food was dangerous was from crackpots that also thinks we will all get fried by 5g wifi... this is a teacher though kind of concerning

I think he is a crackpot. He's offering an opinion with no basis in fact.

It happens too often that some people has just one or two wild beliefs, while in other areas they still can act/think reasonably.
Quite troublesome since in such cases the 'normal' part gives credit to the 'crackpot' part.
Especially troublesome when it's not across different sciences (like some physicist giving health advice or a chemist running against general relativity), but within one scientific area.
I don't know any real solution for this.

Haven't found any evidence that shows microwaving food is detrimental. Obviously, don't stand in front of a microwave if it's open, but most microwaves won't even operate with open door.

A bit concerning since it's coming from a teacher :frown:

As you should know, we don't debunk pseudoscience here at the PF. Thread will remain closed.

1. Is microwaved food safe to eat?

Yes, microwaved food is generally considered safe to eat. The microwave uses electromagnetic radiation to heat up food, which can cause some changes in the food's molecules but does not make it unsafe to consume.

2. Can microwaves cause health problems?

There is no evidence to suggest that microwaves cause any health problems. The FDA regulates the safety of microwave ovens and has determined that when used properly, they do not pose any health risks.

3. Are microwaves harmful to nutrients in food?

Microwaves can cause some nutrient loss in food, but so can any other cooking method. The best way to preserve nutrients in food is to cook it for a short amount of time and with minimal water.

4. Can microwaves cause cancer?

There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that microwaves cause cancer. The electromagnetic radiation used in microwaves is non-ionizing, meaning it does not have enough energy to damage DNA and cause cancer.

5. Is it safe to microwave food in plastic containers?

It is generally safe to microwave food in plastic containers, as long as they are labeled as microwave-safe and do not contain any BPA or other harmful chemicals. It is always a good idea to check the label and use caution when microwaving food in any type of container.
