Chemistry ORGO: What does it mean when a molecule is 'quenched?'

Homework Statement n/a Homework Equations n/a The Attempt at a Solution n/a Just a question. I keep seeing that in SN2 reactions, sometimes a molecule is quenched by H2O or H3O. I've seen it turn an O- into an OH and also a heteroatom into an H. What exactly is going on here?

Redox Reaction in Dissolved Ammonium Chloride

Quick note: Sorry for dominating the homework help board, guys! But, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who replies to my excessive questions. This forum's input has become integral to me as I am in a position now where I can't go to my teacher for help because of the logistics of commuting...

    Percent yield crazy--help with calculations?

Homework Statement Consider: 2 mol Reactant A (aq) + 3 mol Reactant B (aq) = 6 mol Product A (aq) + 1 mol Product B (s) You have 0.00075 L of a 0.0514M solution of Reactant A. In the lab, you combine it with 0.042 L of 0.0753M of Reactant B. You get a solid product and an aqueous product (a...

    Oxidation reaction-which is oxidized?

Homework Statement 2Ag2S(s) + O2(g) = Ag2O(s) + S(s) Which is being oxidized? Homework Equations N/a The Attempt at a Solution Reactants: Ag2S is neutral, with Ag having +1 charge and S having 2- charge. O2 is neutral Products: Ag2O is neutral, with Ag having a 1+ charge and O having -2...

Are open-air distillation and simple distillation the same?

Homework Statement There really is no problem for this. I am just writing my procedure for orgo lab and I haven't don't any distillation before. I tried googling "open-air" distillation to see if it was equivalent to simple distillation, but I can't seem to get a straight answer. Homework...

Organic chem: draw this in line angle structure

Homework Statement Draw this formula in line angle structure. CH3CH2OC(O)CH2CC(CH2)3CH(CN)CHO. Homework Equations None. The Attempt at a Solution I'm confused with the CC(CH2)3 part of the condensed formula. I knew I got it wrong the first time I drew it because I couldn't just tag three...

    Significant figures in chemistry?

@Borek I see what you mean. When we were pouring out water into our glassware, we were aiming for 30.0mL every time (haha, even arduously adding drops of water in/out to get the meniscus as close to the 30mL line as possible). Of course, there is human error--calculated volume results show us...

    Significant figures in chemistry?

@Borek The 30mL comes from the amount we measured out in glassware. So, for example, we measured out 30mL of water in a 125mL beaker. It was not a calculated value.

Use math to prove which lab equipment was precise/accurate?

Homework Statement We performed an experiment to see which laboratory glassware was more accurate and which was more precise. Question: (a): Which glassware was more precise and why? (b) Which glassware was more accurate and why? Use the calculations to support your statement. I won't post the...

    Significant figures in chemistry?

Homework Statement I'm having difficulties figuring out how many significant figures to report for several caluclations in my lab report. As it is a report, there are no specific problem statements. Homework Equations No equations, but there is a rule I was told: when dividing/multiplying I...
