    Also, UC Berkeley has a good Physics program. Did you consider that university? It's public, and I'm not sure, but I think after the first year, you qualify for resident tuition fee (that is assuming you're not a Californian).

    A B.S. degree will open the door for technical positions at places like NASA and other similar research institutions, however it may take many years for you to pay off the $120K debt.     There is a physicist by the name of Amos Ori whose research is about this subject matter. I have met him many years ago at Caltech, and he did explain to me that it is possible to escape the event horizon. I had a copy of his paper, and he has worked with Kip Thorne on this subject matter...
