How do I find the orthonormal basis for the intersection of subspaces U and V?
The vectors I got were different but the question was the same; new numbers are generated every submission and I didn't write the matrix I got down, just scratchwork. But here's how I would solve the one in the original post: First I'd rewrite the vectors as matrices: 2 0 -6 6 6 6 -2 -1 5 1 3...- BluePhone

How do I find the orthonormal basis for the intersection of subspaces U and V?
Old thread, I know, but same question. I tried doing the things OP said he did but ended up with the wrong answer. Here's what I did. First I took the vectors that spanned U and made them the rows of a 3x4 matrix A. Then I got the RREF form of this matrix and found the 4x1 matrix X where AX =...- BluePhone

Understanding the Limit of sqrt(x^2 + 2x -1) + x as x Approaches -infinity
I don't really get it but next time I get a similar question I'll just remember to put in the negative sign.- BluePhone

Understanding the Limit of sqrt(x^2 + 2x -1) + x as x Approaches -infinity
Don't know what Lhopital's rule is. I followed theclock54's post and understood everything till the part where he says "but because you're approaching negative infinity, you have to tack on a (-) negative sign in front of the bottom square root. ". I see how we get the limit when we do that...- BluePhone

Understanding the Limit of sqrt(x^2 + 2x -1) + x as x Approaches -infinity
Can somebody please explain to me how the limit of this funciton is -1? http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=lim+%28sqrt%28x^2+%2B+2x+-1%29+%2B+x%29+as+x+approaches+-infinity I've tried multiplying by the conjugate but that isn't helping since I keep getting negative infinity as the limit...- BluePhone

Why Is This Trig Equation So Challenging to Solve?
Thank you for the quick reply but I'm not sure what I need to do with that equation. I tried substituting values and in the end I got x = -38.23 which is incorrect Edit: For the love of... it worked! Tried it again and apparently I'd done some of mistake, but that formula is magical! I'd be...- BluePhone

Why Is This Trig Equation So Challenging to Solve?
I have spent over an hour trying to solve this equation but I cannot seem to do anything with the equation after I get to the point where .529cosx + 0.916sinx = 1 I've tried doing a million other substitutions and methods but I just don't know how I should go about finding x. Any...- BluePhone
