The Ultimate Spinning Universe: Does It End?

Good explanation Jon. I just read all the galaxies in our local group (but prob not local supercluster) display blueshift (approach... or rotation?), whereas (nearly) all the other observable galaxies/objects display redshift.

If a blackhole contains a singularity, and the big bang was as well

Blackholes are content to continue gobbling up matter, how do u get more massive than infinity? It seems like you're wondering what started the big bang, and putting it down to a hole rippage of the singularity (whatever that means). Not sure how you can tear a hole in a point of zero volume...

The Ultimate Spinning Universe: Does It End?

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/2/2f/Local_Group.JPG Yes I'd say that was incorrect. Take a look at a map of our local group, and note the massive expanses of millions and millions of light years of nothingness inbetween the galaxies. I guess you are assuming gravity...

    Layman's question about gravitons

Its my understanding that matter particles all have spin 1/2, and the force particles have spin 0, 1 and 2. Its also on some weird 720 degree measurement, where u need two complete revolutions to get the particle to look the same. Spin (with Paulis exclusion principle) explains why quarks form...

A Layman's Question of the Big Bang

Making a loaf of raisin bread provides a better analogy to the big bang and the expansion of the universe than an explosion. The Universe is expanding, and not only that, but the rate of expansion is increasing. The Universe is moving like a runaway train. One day it may end in a Big Rip, when...

Unit of Measurement: Arbitrary or Dependent on Physical Laws?

Whats the explanation as to why the universe just happens to be expanding at just below the critical rate?

Unraveling the Big Bang Question: Escaping the Gravitational Pull of Black Holes

The Little Book of Science, John Gribbin, Penguin, First ed 1999. Note he's written a biography of Hawking and Feynman. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gribbin Missing from his bibliography there tho, it does say its a partial list http://www.amazon.com/dp/0140280057/?tag=pfamazon01-20...

Will humans ever really understand why the universe exists?

I enjoyed reading that the408 welcome to teh PF boards :) I'm thinking why you registered is more important than how -.-

Unraveling the Big Bang Question: Escaping the Gravitational Pull of Black Holes

I read immediately after the Big Bang VERY HEAVY particles (X-particles) were made with masses billions that of a proton (which is pretty heavy for a particle), which then decayed very quickly, fragmenting into showers of other particles and antiparticles. From this mass annihilation, there...

Will humans ever really understand why the universe exists?

Ok this thread got moved from cosmology, I'll give philosophy a go then... :) Thats a good point sirzerp but flawed... what more complexity do we need to evolve to? We can't evolve to 5+ dimensional beings with the size less than that of an atom to use or understand those dimensions, this...

Unraveling the Big Bang Question: Escaping the Gravitational Pull of Black Holes

Theres an addage in quantum mechanics that states "Anything which is not forbidden is compulsory." This means that even in a vacuum with zero energy, particle-antiparticle pairs can pop into existence out of nothing at all, provided they almost immediately annihilate each other (in a sense...

Will humans ever really understand why the universe exists?

You guys seem to be delving into unanswerable philosophical discussions. Why - for what reason does the apple fall to the ground? The gravity of the entire Earth broke the EM bonds between a few atoms in the stalk of an apple to pull it off the tree. Why - for what reason does the Earth have...

Will humans ever really understand why the universe exists?

I read the total energy of the universe is zero, i.e. negative gravitational energy cancels out the positive energy of matter. My point is what do u call non-existence, because if its zero total energy equilibrium or zero matter (aka big bang), then even non-existence could be considered existence.

Is the center of the universe constantly changing?

There is no 'centre', the universe looks the same in all directions whatever viewpoint you take, we accept this on the grounds of humility. There are some slight deviations in the microwave radiation background tho, to be expected, just means some regions during inflation were denser than...

What is the Nature of Dark Matter and How Are Scientists Trying to Discover It?

I thought dark matter was obscured matter from our view.. take a nebula like the horsehead for example... all but the brightest stars behind it are obscured from our viewpoint. This is not dark matter. Dark matter seems to be the mass of invisible sub-atomic particles (virtual particles?)...
