Collatz Conjecture Paper: Check it Out & Give Opinion

My friend has been working on this.. but I highly doubt he will make much progress in solving it. Erdos did not think mathematics was ready for such problems. He also called it one of the few remaining problems which can readily explained to the layman. I think he offered a 50 dollar reward...

    Practical applications of number theory?

I've heard some of the divisibility algorithms are used in computer science... Otherwise, though, number theory is a field of math which is very "pure".

Photon Width: What Have I Missed?

I have always had the same problem of visualizing the size and 'shape' of photons: which we all know have particle properties. There are many confusing diagrams in textbooks which show photons as little "blobs" or wave packets with definite dimensions, or as points even. I am a college freshman...

Is Copyright Infringement Morally Equivalent to Stealing?

Yea... I've changed my mind and I agree it's definently immoral, not to mention illegal in the US

Good programs that allow for overclocking via Windows?

This is definently true.. but if you have an nForce chipset on your mobo then you can use the program nTune. I find it works pretty good, although it can't unlock multipliers or do anything to serious. I think you can also use the program fanspeed to monitor and prehaps change? your system..

    Misconceptions about length contraction

Could someone please, briefy explain length contraction under general relativity?? Is it possibly for the universe to contract around a spaceship so that the distances between stars become only inches.. and thus it becomes possible to reach stars lightyears away in very little time? THe...

The hardest logical puzzle according to George Boolos

WOW this is tough... but since I know it's solvable mayby I'll try to take a crack at it when I'm bored...

Is Copyright Infringement Morally Equivalent to Stealing?

Micheal Moore said that filesharing is moral as long as people are not selling things and making money. Therefore I did not fell I had been immoral when I downloaded his documentary Fahrenheit 911. However, I respect other musicians that may not want there files to be shared or their movies to...

Contradiction of God's Omnipotence, Omniscience, and Omnibenevolence

The question has arisen, if God is all loving and powerfull, why dosn't he just save us all from sin right now?? The answer is God respects our free will, and that we must ask him to come into our heart and help us.. we must show that we want his love. Then he can save us from sin and we can...

Is good and evil just a matter of perspective or are they fundamental truths?

Moral relatavism wins out on this issue. The problem is that we do not have any set definition for good or evil... for instance if the definition of good was "increasing the propagation of the human race" and evil was something that did the opposite, then it would be very clear that there is...

Hard Drive Problem: Troubleshooting a Quamtun Bigfoot 6.5 Gb

Although taking the cover off was stupid.. it should be ok Probably the only hope left is to boot from a floppy and run chkdsk... that would check for corruptions and hopefully fix em. If you can't do that, then it's probably dead. If u really wanted to recover the data on the drive u could...

The Death of the Centre of Mass Theorem.

I agree with Rouge Physicist, and have come across this problem before. An interesting example to consider is an L shaped bar. Under the center of mass "theorum", an object would be attracted to a point outside the bar, but of course, this is not what really happens. To actually calculate...

How Does Friction Affect the Work Done in a Closed Loop?

The formula W = ( \mu mg \cdot \vec{F}_\textrm{normal} ) ( AB + BC + CD + DA )does indeed work. But remember that work equals force times displacement, not distance. The displacement (net distance traveled) in this case is zero, so the work is zero. If you want to show this, make CD and DA...

Testing What are some strategies for mastering the SAT?

speed I'm on a High School quiz team, and I know that in some instances speed is everything. The best way to get faster at something is to gain confidence in your abilities by studying and practicing. That way, you won't be second guessing yourself. Intrestingly enough, a private study showed...
