High School Why does SQRT((-3)^2) equal 3 instead of -3?
Okay... so from what I'm understanding so far you should work from the inside out when dealing with parentheses inside parentheses. This allows me to get the value of 3. However, suppose I define x = -3. I then have SQRT(x^2) which yields just x. This simplification yields -3 as the result of...- DMBdyn

High School Why does SQRT((-3)^2) equal 3 instead of -3?
I am having trouble understanding why the following expression is equal to 3: SQRT((-3)^2) What prevents me from cancelling the exponent 2 by the exponent 1/2 introduced by the square root, which yields a value of -3? Thanks for the help!- DMBdyn

Which process results in greater work done for the expansion of an ideal gas?
1. Consider an I.G. expanding from a given state to a fixed final volume at either an isobaric or isothermal process. For which case is the work done greater? 2.Energy balance: \sumEin - \sumEout = (Win - Wout) + (Qin - Qout) = \DeltaU; W = \int Fds Where Q represents heat, W represents work...- DMBdyn

Dynamics Newton's 2nd Law and Forces of Friction
Homework Statement Block B rests upon a smoot surface. If the coefficients of static and kinetic friction between A and B are mu_s=0.4 and mu_k=0.3, respectively, determine the acceleration of each block if P=6lb. (picture attached below) Homework Equations Using Newton's Second Law...- DMBdyn

Schools Applying to Graduate School for Engineering: What are the Expectations?
Currently, I am a in the undergraduate engineering program at NCSU, pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I just completed my sophomore year. I was wondering what sort of things are expected of undergraduates who are applying to graduate school. Of course, I would love to be able to...- DMBdyn

High School Newton's Third Law and Acceleartion
Right now I am taking a classical physics course and find myself struggling with Newton's Third Law, which states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I am struggling to interpret this in a way such that I can still accept movement of objects. If I attempt to slide...- DMBdyn
