Engineering Volunteering at an engineering firm/company
I am a recent in Civil Engineering looking for full time. It seems that many jobs want someone with experience in their perspective field. So I want to find some volunteer work in some local civil Eng. firms. For those working in an engineering company and/or have worked with volunteers, do you...- driedupfish

Ways on how visualize the deflected shape of a simple structure?
Hi guys, what are some ways to visualize the deflected shape of a simple structure? I know that there is no slope or deflection at fix ends. No deflection at supports (roller, fix ends, etc). Also, I am not really sure what a kink is. Thanks- driedupfish

Maximum slope and deflection of beam
Homework Statement I need to find the max slope and deflection of beams with several different types of loading on them. I need to first find a load function or a moment function. Then use integration (and boundary conditions or continuity conditions) to find an expression for the slope and...- driedupfish

How does a portable fan oscillate?
If you guys look at the first picture, there seems to be copper wiring around the magnet. Can someone explain the function of this? Sorry if this is a stupid topic, I really have no idea.- driedupfish

How does a portable fan oscillate?
I am curious as to how a portable fan works. I took one apart and here are some pictures of the motor: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B9FkpE8S_7W0NTEwOGZlYzUtMzhkNS00ZmU4LWE5ODItN2Q5NWViNDNmOGMz&hl=en&invite=CIrB408"...- driedupfish

Engineering Job prospect for civil and general engineering.
I am an undergrad in civil. I've heard the current job prospect for civil engineering isn't looking very good, especially in the structural side. So I am tempting to switch out. I am equally interested in mechanical and civil, however, my gpa wasn't good enough to get into mechanical. So instead...- driedupfish

High School How Can You Tell if Your Glasses Have High-Index Lenses?
Recently, I purchased a pair of glasses from a privately owned optic store. I specifically asked for hi-index lens (1.56 or 1.60, I am not sure). The lens I got, however, is kind of thick (around 5 mm thick on the edges). My eye -sight is poor though, -5.00 sphere, -1.25 cylinder on the worst...- driedupfish

Interference of Light: Calculating Intensity at Point O with Two Offset Slits
For a, you have to find the path difference between ABO and ACO. This is 3.142851 E-6. Plug this into phi = 2pi (delta) / lambda. This gets you 41.572874. Now you should have everything you need to solve I = 4(I1) cos^2 (phi/2). B should be the same, because you're increasing both ABO and ACO...- driedupfish
