    Confused about Bogoliubov transformation

So I was told by my teacher today that I am doing the bogoliubov transformation wrong because I'm supposed to have 4 different vectors, i.e Instead of Ak and Bk A1k A2k and B1k B2k I'm wondering how this makes sense. I've seen papers with 2 different vectors and their complex...

Heisenberg interaction Hamiltonian for square lattice

Hi, I just started self studying solid state and I'm having trouble figuring out what the hamiltonian for a square lattice would be when considering the Heisenberg interaction. I reformulated the dot product into 1/2( Si+Si+δ+ +Si+δ+S-- ) + SizSi+δz and use Siz = S-ai+ai Si+ =...

Sakurai 1st edition vs. Sakurai 2nd edition?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to check out Sakurai/Napolitano's 2nd edition of Modern Quantum mechanics. Better or worse than the revised first? Thanks!

Need serious advice with undergrad physics

I had an lazy off-weekend that happened to be the weekend I had a take-home midterm for mechanics, and I ended up a standard deviation below the mean. For E+M I had trouble sleeping the night before exams and I legit got 3 hours of sleep before two of them.

Need serious advice with undergrad physics

So this past spring as a freshman I took intro EM, intermediate mechanics (lagrangians etc), and one-semester quantum mechanics using griffiths. I got an A in quantum (which freshman never take) but unfortunately I slipped up in my other two classes and got AB's (slipped up is verbatim from my...

Can I Handle This Fall Quarter Workload?

I found 3 physics courses and a math course to be just too many numbers for me. Too many different formulas to memorize, unfortunately. E.G Maxwell's equation in differential and integral form, spherical harmonics, formula for hermite polynomials, coupled oscillator equations etc... I imagine...

    Langevin to Fokker-planck? Uh oh

    I'll check it out thanks!

How Can the Langevin Equation Be Transformed into a Fokker-Planck Equation?

Homework Statement This isn't actually homework but I'm really interested in finding the solution. So I have the langevin equation dy/dt = -dV/dy +η(t) where V(y) = -by^3/3 + ζy how can I turn this into a fokker-planck equation? Homework...

    Langevin to Fokker-planck? Uh oh

    This isn't homework but I'm interested. So I have the langevin equation dy/dt = -dV/dy +η(t) where V(y) = -by^3/3 + ζy how can I turn this into a fokker-planck equation? What I'm getting is x' = -u(bx^2+ζ) + η(t) Which I don't know how to...

Important Decision to make about honors/non-honors

So I'm taking quantum mechanics and I'm within the threshold of getting an A in the class. My professor assigned a problem set that we can either do for extra credit OR for honors in the class. Most "honors" physics classes at my university are kinda a joke in that they just require you...

Schools Curious about a couple of grad schools

Hi! I've been searching the web trying to find out the average GPA's of undergraduates in physics who were accepted to Princeton, Caltech, Chicago, MIT, Cornell, etc... with no luck. Could someone enlighten me as to the approximate tiers of difficulty and the corresponding ~GPA's? On...

Schools Do grad schools care if you triple/quadruple up on classes?

Well this semester I'm taking 3 physics classes and I can attest to the fact that it is extremely painful (even though physics is my life;now it literally is). My only concern would be with the differentiable manifolds class with Spivak. I read that one has to have a good grasp of differential...

Schools Do grad schools care if you triple/quadruple up on classes?

Thanks for all the feedback. Well currently I am taking electromagnetism, mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics (and a math class), and I can say that it certainly is an enormous amount of information to try to digest in one semester. The thing is that I want to take as much as I can because I'm...

Schools Do grad schools care if you triple/quadruple up on classes?

So I'm finished with all my core requirements, and I want to major in math or physics. I was wondering if grad schools would have a problem with perhaps the following Analysis II (Rudin) Modern Algebra Elementary Topology Differential Geometry (Spivak) My question is, would a grad...

    Wald for Relativity: Prerequisites?

Next year I was looking to take relativity because it's only taught every 2-3 years, and my favorite professor is teaching it. Problem is, the prerequisite for the class is graduate electrodynamics. I'm wondering, is grad electrodynamics completely necessary for general relativity? I figure it...
