What are acceptable compression test readings for a 4 cylinder engine?

Like others have said, its more important for the cylinder compression readings to be within a close range than the reading itself. I read somewhere that up to 10% difference in cylinder compression is normal but any higher and there may be some leaks. Its important to do a 'wet' compression...

Crankshaft Balance: Is a 45° Angle Possible for a V8?

I agree with Chris. When I read v8 engine running at 15k RPM I immediately thought this was a formula 1 prototype engine, not something that would be suitable for daily driving.

What are the best books for re-learning math?

I picked up a book called "Manga guide to Linear Algebra" and found it really helpful. I know its dramatically different from the books already mentioned here, but I found it really helped me prepare for the class. Paul's notes is good too though.

Crankshaft Balance: Is a 45° Angle Possible for a V8?

It would run fine a low RPM, but at these high revolutions you would find better stability if it were set at 90 degrees. 45* crank running at 15,000 RPM just seems way to tight.

Is it Crazy to Start Studying Physics at 36?

My first uni physics class didn't require calculus (and barely needed algebra), though the prof didn't mind if people used it to solve problems. From this class, physics split into two streams, one algebra/trig based and the other calculus based. The algebra based one were geared toward arts...

Tire Lug Wear: Understanding Flat Lugs on New and Worn Tires

How would a tire wear on an unbalanced wheel? Would it be similar to a tire mounted to a bent wheel?

How Can a Beginner Learn About Car Mechanics and Design?

The only people I've met who could actually build an entire car to their own specs were mechanics, at one point or another. It helps to have a first hand look at a lot of the systems the different manufacturers use so you can understand what works in certain applications and what doesn't.

Tire Lug Wear: Understanding Flat Lugs on New and Worn Tires

Most passenger tires have a tread depth of 9 to 13 16ths of an inch, consistently from side to side. If inflated to the correct pressure and mounted on an aligned vehicle, the tire should wear evenly.

General and/or Specific Advice For a Fall 2014 Freshman

Its alright provided that some of those credits come via labs and homework-light classes. Some universities limit 1st year students to taking only a certain amount of classes per term, mine was 15 credits @ 3cr per course. Enroll in classes as early as possible to get a decent schedule...
