Graduate Optimal discretization and expansion order of arbitrary data
Hi all, I am trying to figure out 1) What to call my problem so I can better research the literature, and 2) see if anyone here knows of a solution. Essentially, I have a large set of f(x) vs x points (~20,000) which I need to split into subdomains in x, and within each subdomain...- laxsu19

Experts give your tips for recent graduates
It depends what you want to do. To work supporting the currently operating power reactors, I'd recommend looking for a job first off. The company will likely have a way to educate you further if you or they desire so. If you want to do research at a national lab, then you likely need to...- laxsu19

What Does Hardening of Neutron Spectra Mean?
Put simply, a harder spectrum has the neutrons traveling at higher speeds (on average).- laxsu19

Prospective Nuclear Engineering Career
I disagree with the 2 previous posts about going on to get a graduate degree in nuclear engineering. A graduate degree is not necessary - I know many of my undergraduate classmates who went out into industry or the national labs in a nuclear engineering field. In fact, I'd say more went on to...- laxsu19

Travelling wave reactor anyone ?
I don't know, the number of depletable regions, for a trustworthy calculation (and a very fine depletion profile which should be necessary for this type of reactor) would, I imagine, make this incredibly time consuming to run with an MCNP-Monteburns job.- laxsu19

Travelling wave reactor anyone ?
I am pretty skeptical of how they would keep it going too. neutrons don't just travel to the next layer of atoms, so there must be some fissions happening at some larger delta x, which means there are fission products there. I expect these f.p.s will build up enough to halt the 'forward...- laxsu19

Is it a myth that France has a successful nuclear industry?
From the article: To clear up any confusion... 'final energy' seems to be defined in Schneider's paper as a the total energy consumed (if you can call it that) by France, including electricity production, industry, transportation (no wonder oil dominates!), etc. Always be wary when you see...- laxsu19

How Will Shifting to Renewable Energy Affect Our Lives?
I'm not sure I understand where you're going cesiumfrog; I took Xnn's quote to mean that since a great amount of electricity is required to produce the silicon, then that electricity has to come from somewhere. Xnn then stated that electricity in China is produced in a way that also produces a...- laxsu19

How Will Shifting to Renewable Energy Affect Our Lives?
And while all of that R&D is happening, expect the price of that particurlar alternative energy source to be more expensive than its non-alternative counterparts (coal, nat. gas, etc.)- laxsu19

Are Point-Wise Cross-Sections Feasible for GPGPU-Optimized Monte Carlo Codes?
Thanks for the info. I read that paper you linked to, AMPX isn't a data access code though is it? It sort of works more like NJOY (but in a way that scale wants) as far as I can tell. Is that the case?- laxsu19

Are Point-Wise Cross-Sections Feasible for GPGPU-Optimized Monte Carlo Codes?
p.s. I think the BEST solution would be if there was a library out there to do this for me (I am writing in C/C++ btw), not sure I know of one on the RSICC, or even sourceforge for that matter.- laxsu19

Are Point-Wise Cross-Sections Feasible for GPGPU-Optimized Monte Carlo Codes?
Hi all, I've noticed there are a few PhDs on this board whose experience I'd like to leverage. For my masters thesis I am writing a monte carlo transport code from scratch. The end goal of this work is to examine the feasibility of porting the code to a GPGPUs. I chose to write the code from...- laxsu19
