High School Mental Subtraction: Tips & Tricks
Thats not bad. On the addition one I can consistently get around 30 but for subtraction I'm at around 20. All through school I relied on my calculator like nothing else so I guess I have a bit of practice to do. Its rewarding seeing improvements though. On the addition I started at around 20.- mickdriscoll

High School Mental Subtraction: Tips & Tricks
thanks Gib Z. That is a good idea. I guess lots of practice is also good. If you do 61 - 28, do you know the answer in your head immediately? Or does it take you a second or two. For example I may go 61 -30 + 2 so my sequence is 61..31..33 but it takes extra time.. maybe I just need more...- mickdriscoll

High School Mental Subtraction: Tips & Tricks
Hello fellow maths people, I studied a lot of maths at uni but I'm recently into doing some mental maths. I'm wondering, does anyone have any good mental techniques for doing 3 digit subtraction? For example: Whats: 452 - 376 = 761 - 628 = 432 - 259 = You should be able to...- mickdriscoll

How Do Different Valves and Nozzles Work in Water Rockets?
Can someone please explain how a water rocket valve will work. i know you could use a cork and a tyre valve as a very simple design with the bottle opening being the nozzle shape. but what are some other valves that ensure the bottle is pumped to the maximum pressure it can hold (a cork will...- mickdriscoll

Gear Shaft Design: Calculating Forces on the Gear Shaft
no, none of the shaft radii are given. i am to work out minimum shaft diameter of the intermediate shaft given the information above. the gears sizes ARE given. i assume that in order to start i should work out the torques on the intermediate shaft.- mickdriscoll

Gear Shaft Design: Calculating Forces on the Gear Shaft
so i just work out the force applied by the pinion on the drive shaft and then put the force on the gear of the intermediate shaft times the distance? sounds obvious now. do i baisically treat the system as not moving (static) under the constant velocity condition?- mickdriscoll

Gear Shaft Design: Calculating Forces on the Gear Shaft
thanks for the quick response. what I am wondering is how do i calculate the torques? the system layout is attached i have the drive torque (the bottom shaft). the load torque (the top shaft) is constant but not given. my end goal is to calculate a suitable intermediate shaft (the middle...- mickdriscoll

Gear Shaft Design: Calculating Forces on the Gear Shaft
hi everyone, suppose i have a system of gears where one shaft contains the initial pinion. a drive torque is applied to the pinion shaft so that the pinion then applies a force to the gear its connected to. how would i calculate the forces on the gear shaft? it is a static system (contant...- mickdriscoll
