Understanding Ohms: A Beginner's Guide
Homework Statement This is not exactly a homework problem, but it's one that marks me as a beginner: is there an intuitive physical understanding, using dimensional analysis, of the unit combination making up the "ohm"? I don't mean a physical understanding of resistance--that's not a...- SaraF

Induced Current Direction in a Moving Square Loop
I think the problem is pretty easy to solve if you recognize that the change in magnetic flux is the product of the (constant) magnetic field and the change in area. The change in area can be calculated using basic geometry...calculate the original area, calculate the final area, and subtract...- SaraF

Direction of Induced Current in a Small Loop Inside a Solenoid
Thanks. I will do so. I figured that electron drift had something to do with it.- SaraF

Direction of Induced Current in a Small Loop Inside a Solenoid
Thanks, I wondered if that was the case. But that implies that a decreasing clockwise current is the same as a counterclockwise current. That is hard to reconcile with the image of electrons moving through a wire...one pictures a decreased "flow" rate but no change in direction. I realize...- SaraF

Direction of Induced Current in a Small Loop Inside a Solenoid
Homework Statement This is a question from the Princeton Review of AP physics B, 2011 edition. A small circular loop of wire (radius r) is placed on an insulating stand inside a hollow solenoid of radius R. The solenoid has n turns per unit length and carries a counterclockwise current I...- SaraF

Planetary Orbit Energy Calculation Without Gravitational Potential Equation
Homework Statement A satellite is to be launched from Earth to venus. It is to make two complete circuits of the earth, then travel to venus, and complete one orbit of venus in 12 hours. Find the velocities of the satellite around venus, around the earth, and the radius of the orbit around...- SaraF

Energy conservation with interfering waves
Homework Statement This is a theory question that has puzzled me for a long time: Two waves of exactly the same amplitude, and exactly opposite phase and opposite velocity are traveling toward each other through some medium such as a rope, a slinky, or whatever. They meet and interfere...- SaraF

Roller Coaster + Centripetal Force
As I understand, normal force is a reaction to the force that an object exerts on the surface it is in contact with. So if an object near the surface of the Earth (i.e. ordinary life) rests on a surface, gravity is pulling it down with a force equal to its weight, mg, and since the object is on...- SaraF
