Carbon Dating: Calculating the Age of a Specimen

    1. An archeological specimen containing 8.7 g of carbon has an activity of 1.6 Bq. How old (in years) is the specimen? 2. Decay constant for Carbon= 0.693 / 5730 yr = 1.21 x 10^-4 1.6/8.7= 0.1839 activity per gram of C 0.23 is Activity of C at t=0 3. ln(0.1839/.23) =...

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

yea that's what happened I guess or I must've entered it wrong in my calculator some how... anyway, much appreciation for the help.

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

hmm, rerunning it i get the 2.7 x 10^-7 Joules too, not sure how i got the other number the first time... maybe I wrote it down wrong

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

ok its correct, I'm going back through it all to see what we did differently.

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

    i did the following: 1.810725 u x 1.6605 x 10^-27 Kg = 3.00671 x 10^-27 Kg 3.00671 x 10^-27 Kg x (c^2) = 5.5715 x 10^-12 J 5.5715 x 10^-12 J / 1.6 x 10^-19 J = 34821826.4 eV = 34.82 MeV

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

the correct answer in u was 1.810725 u for the mass defect

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

thats what I did... hmmmwould you mind running it quickly and seeing if you get a number other than 34.8 MeV?

As do we in America, I'm in college.

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

ok I'm getting it equals 34.8 MeV and this isn't right what am I doing wrong here. Again, my book shows how to convert from kg in J then into eV then into MeV.And I had to use u because that was the required unit in the first part of the problem

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

ok its right thanks no idea why my book left that out..money well spent

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

ok i'll try that but my book says nothing about including electrons

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

mass defect takes place in the nucleus though

B.) Mass Defect & Binding Energy for Astatine 21885At

    1. For astatine 21885At (atomic mass = 218.008684 u) obtain each of the following: (a) The mass defect in atomic mass units wrong check mark u (b) the binding energy (in MeV) MeV (c) the binding energy per nucleon (in MeV) MeV 2. Shown in atempt...

Calculate K X-ray photon energy of osmium using Bohr model | K Alpha Energy Q1

ok I found it by going through the wavelength. Is that the fastest way?

Calculate K X-ray photon energy of osmium using Bohr model | K Alpha Energy Q1

    1. The atomic number of osmium is Z = 76. According to the Bohr model, what is the energy (in joules) of a K X-ray photon? 2. ? 3. The reason I left relavent eqns blank is because I used the following: En = -(13.6) Z^2/n^2 subtracting one from Z before squaring and converting...
