Pigs in space and circular orbit
Homework Statement Two particles pigs of mass ##m## and ##M## undergo uniform circular motion about each other at a separation of ##R## under the influence of an attractive force ##F##. The angular velocity is ##\omega## radians per second. Show that R = \frac{F}{\omega^2}\left( \frac{1}{m} +...- swevener

Throwing a ball from atop a hill
Well, it was the way I was trying to do it, but if anything I've learned that I tend to overcomplicate things. Anyway, I figured out the problem was my rotated frame. I plugged the ##2 t_{\text{max}}## I got above into the unrotated horizontal component of the distance equation and got the...- swevener

Throwing a ball from atop a hill
Using -60º just gives me +75º. I've played with all the signs; the only answer that (sort of) works out is the one I got. And solving the problem without the frame rotation is all kinds of unpleasant.- swevener

Throwing a ball from atop a hill
It seems to me my equation should be spitting out 15º, not 15º - 90º.- swevener

Throwing a ball from atop a hill
Homework Statement A boy stands at the peak of a hill which slopes downward uniformly at angle ##\phi##. At what angle ##\theta## from the horizontal should he throw a rock so that it has the greatest range? Homework Equations ##\mathbf{s} = \mathbf{v}_0 t + \frac{1}{2} \mathbf{a} t^2##...- swevener

1D kinematics - finding g from time traveled
Homework Statement This is from Kleppner, problem 1.12 in the 2010 edition, if you want to see the diagram. The acceleration of gravity can be measured by projecting a body upward and measuring the time that it takes to pass two given points in both directions. Show that if the time the...- swevener

Lagrange interpolation formula
Homework Statement (a) If x_{1},\ldots, x_{n} are distinct numbers, find a polynomial function f_{i} of degree n - 1 which is 1 at x_{i} and 0 at x_{j} for j \ne i. Hint: the product of all (x - x_{j}) for j \ne i is 0 at x_{j} if j \ne i. This product is usually denoted by \prod_{\substack{j...- swevener

Schools How important is foreign language for math (graduate school)?
If you like Mandarin, go for Mandarin. Aside from the fact that learning a language you're interested in is way more fun than learning one you're not, it seems to me Chinese is highly marketable these days. And usually if a program requires or looks highly on knowing a foreign language, which...- swevener
