Two explanations have been suggested on this forum: (i) drag, and (ii) the influence of other planets, especially Jupiter. The influence of Jupiter does not explain why Jupiter itself has a near circular orbit, and, more importantly, why its Galilean satellites have very nearly circular orbits...
