Computer Architechture: Size of Mantissa
Sorry, I should have said 1.9, written in base 10. For finding the max number, this rounds to 2 and is multiplied by the largest exponent (22047)? Thanks, you have been a huge help.- wclawson

Computer Architechture: Size of Mantissa
Ok, I see. Let me make sure I have this straight. Since there are 12 bits for E, that means the bias is 2047. Therefore the largest number possible to display is 22047 times 1.9999... (from the mantissa), right?- wclawson

Computer Architechture: Size of Mantissa
Yes, thank you for noticing my mistake it should be 4096. So a FP number with 32 bits would have 32-12-1=19 bits, but does that include the 1 preceding the M (1.M)? By having 0.xx instead of .xx, does that mean that only half the amount of numbers represented with 1.xx can be used? What...- wclawson

Computer Architechture: Size of Mantissa
Homework Statement Floating Point representation: Given Xmax/Xmin=2^4076, what is the size of the mantissa? How many numbers can exist? If mantissa is 0.xxx instead of 1.xxx, how many numbers can exist? Homework Equations (-1)S x 1.M x BE The Attempt at a Solution I'm not sure, but is this...- wclawson

Engineering Op Amp Circuit Help: Solving KCL Eq with Source Transform
It was much easier scanning the pictures and problem than trying to recreate: I began by doing a source transform, making Vs = is*Rs, and placing Rs in series instead of parallel. I then did KCL at Vn. I tried to break the KCL eq down to il/is, but just ended up with some un-godly...- wclawson

How Can I Adjust Vcc to Correct a 10V Output on my Amp Power Supply?
Vout = A(Vp-Vn) A = open loop gain specified by op amp (usually around x10^5) Vp = non-inverting input Vn = inverting input Vcc is normally around tens of volts. Have you tried increasing it to change the range? Based on the eq above, in the linear range: -Vcc< Vout < -Vcc- wclawson

Testing Failed midsem EM exam, to drop or not to drop?
If you didn't put as much study time in as you thought you needed, why are you concerned about the whole course? I assume you don't plan on repeating this again. I'm not trying to be smart, I just think that if you knew that you could have used more studying, you will also know that for...- wclawson

Engineering Course Plan: What's Best?
At my school, the majority of physics II students were taking calc III concurrently. However, there were maybe 5-7 people who were taking ODE instead. The prof gave them a waiver and allowed them in the class. They didn't struggle at all.- wclawson

Major Decision: Advice for Picking Degree Programs
After doing some more reading, I feel I am approaching my decision. I'm becoming especially interested in communication systems and radio astronomy (as mentioned above) and I definitely want to study EE, be it undergrad or grad. I am now becoming afraid that if I choose physics for undergrad...- wclawson

Major Decision: Advice for Picking Degree Programs
Thanks for your input. I pretty much have it narrowed down to either phd physics or ms EE after I complete my BS physics. I want a kick *** job after I graduate, and I'd like to start a family soon after as well. I am afraid that if I go phd I will be further away from that (true?/false?) and...- wclawson
