Problem about units conversion: cm^2 --> m^2

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the conversion of area from square centimeters to square meters, specifically addressing the confusion surrounding the calculation of (10 cm)². It is established that 10 cm x 10 cm equals 100 cm², which is equivalent to 0.01 m². The importance of maintaining the correct units during squaring operations is emphasized, as (0.1 m)² results in 0.01 m², confirming that 100 cm² equals 0.01 m². The conversation clarifies that area cannot be directly converted to length, reinforcing the distinction between units of area and units of length.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of unit conversion, specifically between metric units.
  • Familiarity with area calculations in geometry.
  • Basic knowledge of exponentiation and its application to units.
  • Concept of dimensional analysis in physics or mathematics.
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of dimensional analysis to understand unit conversions better.
  • Learn about area calculations and conversions between different units of area, such as square meters and square centimeters.
  • Explore the implications of exponentiation in unit conversions, particularly in physics and engineering contexts.
  • Investigate common mistakes in unit conversions and how to avoid them in mathematical problems.
USEFUL FOR

Students in mathematics or physics, educators teaching unit conversions, and anyone involved in fields requiring precise measurements and conversions of area.

Homework Statement
I need to find how much meters equal to area of 100cm²
Relevant Equations
100cm = 1m
10cm = 1/10m = 0.1m
10cm² ≠ (1/10m)² = (0.1m)²
in the problem 100 cm is obviously equal to 1m, and 10cm is equal to 1/10m and it is equal to 0.1m, but when you take the square of the 10cm it is obviously does not equal (1/10m)² nor (0.1m)², therefore (10cm x 10cm ≠ 1/10m x 1/10m = 0.1m x 0.1m), then to what 10cm x 10cm is equal to in meters? 1/100m or 0.01 meters does not equal to 100cm, this problem seems really easy, but I've tried come up with solution but I wasn't able to. if I take off the units it is obvious that one doesn't not equal to other, any help would be really appreciated.

If ##x=y ## then ##x^2=y^2##.
If ##10cm=(1/10)m## then what is ##(10cm)^2##?

No, it is 0.01 m² = 100 cm². The exponent on the units is important:
  • (0.1 m) X (0.1 m) = (0.1 X 0.1) (m X m) = 0.01 m.m = 0.01 m²;
  • (10 cm) X (10 cm) = (10 X 10) (cm X cm) = 100 cm.cm = 100 cm².
You can even have uncommon units like (0.1 m) X (10 cm) = (0.1 X 10) (m X cm) = 1 m.cm which is also equal to 0.01 m² or 100 cm².

That can't be answered! The meter is a unit of length and the square centimeter is a unit of area. You can't convert an area to a length, it's like converting apples to oranges. The way you've written your thread title indicates that you understand this. You want to convert 100 cm2 to square meters.

Suppose the figure below is a 10 cm by 10 cm square.

It has an area of 100 cm2 because (10 cm)(10 cm) = 100 cm2.

(You can verify this by counting grid squares. There are 100 grid squares, each with an area of 1 cm2.)

The figure is also a 0.1 m by 0.1 m square. What is it's area in square meters?

You can also look at it this way: How many of these 10 cm by 10 cm squares will fit in a square meter? So, this 10 cm by 10 cm square is what fraction of a square meter?
