I was like WITW? And then I had a guess that was confirmed with the 3rd picture.

I saw this picture in my Facebook feed just now, and I'm curious what can cause a rainbow to be so low to the ground. I've never seen one like this. Any ideas?

Very weird...
A rainbow tells you where the sun is behind you - it's directly opposite the centre of the rainbow.

So, if this pic were real, the sun would be opposite the crosshairs (naively, I'm not accounting for lens distortion). It suggests the sun is almost directly overhead 🤔 :

Worse:

There's a shadow here, showing where the sun really is.

If the sun is opposite the very low rainbow doesn't that suggest the sun is very low?

Apparently. But the shadow of the handrail on the trailer/building does not support that...

Well if the sun were overhead there wouldn't be too much shadow. So shadow length inversely proportional to sun elevation

  • #3,490
The shadow of the handrail on the building suggests that the sun is high in the sky to my left. The rainbow should then be normal height and off to my right.

Assuming the photo is not doctored, the only way I can see this happening is if an angled, specular-reflecting surface (a glass roof or solar-panel array?) is located somewhere between the camera and horizon that redirects the sunlight upward, so it appears to originate below ground level.

EDIT: Never mind, this was a lame suggestion!

The angular radius of a rainbow is about 40° to 42° (violet to red). In the picture, the violet edge almost grazes the horizon. Therefore the center of curvature is a smidgen less than 40° below the horizon, and the sun is a smidgen less than 40° above the horizon behind the photographer.

Agreed!

As the sun gets higher in the sky, the top of the rainbow gets closer to the ground, and the visible portion of the arc gets smaller.

No. It suggests the sun is high in the sky. See jtbell's post 3492 and renormalize's post 3493.

I think I remember once seeing a rainbow below the horizon... from an airplane at cruising altitude, flying near a rainstorm.

Or lawn sprinklers. Even a garden hose can work if you put your thumb on it and spray it right.

When was the last time you saw these at a drive-in theater?

I would be afraid to say.

The pair shown in the picture look like it/they are out of place. I am not sure what's in the background but looks strange. Snack bar with line of people and a model train on scaled-down mimicry platform?

It's at a model-train show. One of the club layouts included a miniature drive-in theater, showing a movie on a video screen and playing the soundtrack through the speakers. The last time I was at a real drive-in was probably 40-50 years ago!

When I was a little kid. I don't even remember the movie, but I think it bored me, so I went exploring around the lot and behind the concession stand. Also, the screen was really dim, and the projection failed once or twice, causing everyone to honk their horns and flash their lights. Those speakers always sounded terrible, because they had to be outdoor speakers that could be left in the rain. It was better to have a theater that broadcast the sound to your car radio. Even AM was a step up.

'Went to another [politically related] weekly protest this week. Here are the photos that fit within PF's rules and guidelines (other photos not included). There was occasional rain and drizzle. That didn't stop me though.

Figure 1. "Dog and shoe composition," Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH, 1/160 sec, f/5.6 (might be f/8).

This is my favorite shot in quite a while (see Fig. 1). Sometimes -- rarely, but sometimes -- decent composition just jumps in your lap. Most of this shot was luck, of course. There was no way to plan this composition. It all happened in the blink of an eye. I've never even met these puppies before.

One might argue that the photo is cluttered. But for an unplanned, impromptu, dynamic, street photography scene, I'm pretty proud of it.

My self-critiques are (1) I may have ever-so-slightly blown some highlights on the lead puppy, and (2) there's a bit of weird motion blur on the rear puppy. These puppies were moving around fast. You might think that 1/160 sec is pretty fast for a 35mm lens, but maybe not quite enough for these two little guys.

Figure 2. "OMG it's these two adorable puppies." Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH, 1/160 sec, f/8.

You may remember these two puppies (see Figs. 2-7) from a previous post a few weeks ago. They are the most adorable things ever.

... Continued from previous post.

A mariachi band was playing at the protest (for part of it, anyway). See Figs 8,9.

L1007998-1.webp

Figure 8. <Untitled> Leica 50mm Summilux-M ASPH, 1/1000 sec, f/1.4 (might have been around f/2 or maybe even f/2.8).

Figure 9. <Untitled> Leica 50mm Summilux-M ASPH, 1/250 sec, f/5.6 (roughly).

That was it for the protest. Then I grabbed some lunch and walked around, eventually back to the train station.

Figure 13. <Untitled> Leica 50mm Summilux-M ASPH, 1/350 sec, f/4 (roughly).

Oxford Rd Manchester.
There is so much history for me in just a few miles on this road.
Medical building and Holy name on the left.

IMG_20260228_121542_601~2.webp

Holy name. Our holy days of obligation would have been here when I was at 6th form. The music teacher had a wicked sense of humour. When were singing hymns he would stick a wrong note in the gaps so we could hear it. Nothing worse than a wrong note, in church, very Catholic and very serious.

The union on the left, I saw Focus and Fish there. Admin building behind.
