Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around a problem related to optics, specifically concerning the prescription of contact lenses for a farsighted individual who currently uses eyeglasses with a known refractive power. The original poster seeks to determine the appropriate contact lens prescription that would allow the same reading capabilities as their eyeglasses.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking, Problem interpretation

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to relate the refractive power of the eyeglasses to the focal distance and is uncertain about how to adjust for the distance of the glasses from the eyes when considering contact lenses. Some participants question the implications of the distance at which the image forms with the eyeglasses and how that translates to contact lenses.

Discussion Status

The discussion appears to be in its early stages, with the original poster expressing confusion and seeking clarification. There is a lack of responses, indicating that the topic may require further exploration or input from others. One participant has posed additional questions regarding the focal distance and image formation, suggesting a potential direction for further discussion.

Contextual Notes

The original poster mentions specific measurements related to the eyeglasses and reading distance, which may be critical for determining the contact lens prescription. There is also a note of urgency in the original poster's follow-up post, indicating a desire for prompt assistance.

Homework Statement

A farsighted man uses eyeglasses with a refractive power of 2.20 diopters. Wearing the glasses 0.03 m from his eyes, he is able to read books held no closer than 0.28 m from his eyes. He would like a prescription for contact lenses to serve the same purpose. What is the correct contact lens prescription, in diopters?

Homework Equations

1/do + 1/di = 1/f

The Attempt at a Solution

well starting off i figured if the power is +2.20 dipoeters then the fd is going to be -1/2.20
not sure but since with the glasses it would be 1/fd-.03? and then with the contacts what would happen since there no distance? I am just really confused now lol

Find out at what distance d from the eye the image forms with the ordinary eyeglasses when the book is held at 0.28 m from the eye. What should be the focal distance when the lens is on the eye and the distance of the image is equal to d in the same situation?
