I've read a couple moderating counters to this article and as with most things the truth likely lies in the middle. That said, the middle is still extremely disruptive. My full time job is at a major tech company where I use and see AI every day and can see first hand the potential for global disruption. The next 2-3 years will be very concerning without responsible actors and societies.

It is not necessary to go to the extreme where AGI and highly evolved robotics exist; long before that point we should already be noticing problems and changes in society.

The current state of society is such that your boss is more likely to be replaced by AI than you are. Robotics is not powerful enough to allow for complete replacement.

Because of the article, I decided to see what I can do with Codex on my paid ChatGPT account. It's powerful. I had some initial confusion as to how to get it going but once I did, it works very nicely. Previously with my ChatGPT account, I would upload files, copy sections of code, ask questions, get answers and then update the various files with the changes. Now I just tell it to scan the working directory that it's in, tell it what I want done and it makes all of the changes throughout the code. This is going to be interesting.

Matt Shumer, CEO and cofounder of Otherside AI, wrote an essay on X a few days ago tryng to raise awareness of the progress of AI that has occurred in the last several months. It has had a surprising reaction of concern that he did not intend. He advises those who might be affected by AI to familiarize themselves with the capabilities of the latest models, especially those relevant to their work.

His essay has been critiqued by various people familiar with AI's current capabilities in the business world.

For Palihapitiya, founder of Social Capital, the price has forced him to rethink the budget he’s willing to give top developers, warning that otherwise, “I’ll run out of money.”

For Cuban, that reality is the “smartest counter” he has seen so far to predictions that AI will replace large numbers of workers—at least in the short term.

He also threatened to put the AI company on what could amount to a government blacklist.

At issue is the guardrails Anthropic placed on its AI model Claude. The Pentagon, which has a $200 million contract with Anthropic, wants the company to lift its restrictions for the military to be able to use the model for “all lawful use,” according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

But Anthropic has concerns over two issues that it isn’t willing to drop, the source said: AI-controlled weapons and mass domestic surveillance of American citizens. According to one source familiar, Anthropic believes AI is not reliable enough to operate weapons, and there are no laws or regulations yet that cover how AI could be used in mass surveillance.

I asked Chat GPT which field is more likely to be replaced by A.I.: For example: physicians or engineers. It comes to the conclusion of engineers. I did it for other professions too, it doesn't look good for engineering as a human endeavor in the future. Agree with A.I.?

Now that think of it, perhaps its not as surprising as I thought. The goal of any good engineer should be to engineer away a need for an engineer.

hope they soon realise. i think the problem is with the shareholders and investors of the comapy. they mostly dont have a proper knowledge on tech stuff and be thinking anything and everything can be replaced by ai. so until they realise the job market is going to be BAD

I am concerned about using AI to replace teachers. Children seem to have too much exposure to screen time - we are running into widespread problems with mental health issues, ASD and ADHD. A new trend that I have suddenly noticed is to drastically reduce total screen time for under fives to one hour a day (UK Government recommendation). This will probably be extendedi some form to older children. How can AI fit in with that philosophy? I also notice that children are being encouraged to live in an analogue world, doing non digital activities without screens. How does AI fit with this?
In addition to this, the pace of IT advancement is such that teaching children to use today's digital devices will not likely be helpful to them in their working lives ten years hence.

My experience was that Zoom was hated by the students, the teachers were not getting feedback from them and very little learning took place.

The video focuses on imparting information to students. The primary issue for teaching is not this. It is the development of human interactions so students have the best chance of having a fulfilling and happy life; Clearly, human interactions require a human teacher. Schools are being hit by a wave of children having family issues, mental health problems, autism, ADHD and bad behaviour. The focus on these issues is the drastic reduction in screen time, including mobile phones and television, for the entire 24 hour day of the student. If we do not address these special needs, the system will be crippled by rising costs, and it is unclear how AI, as a computer technology, is going to help.

The NYT reported that MicroSoft is planning to buy out 7% of its workforce, or about 16,000 employees and Meta is planning to lay off 8,000 employees and close 6,000 open roles. They both claim this is due to investing heavily in AI.

The layoffs across the tech industry have continued this week, with cuts from Amazon and battery recycling company Redwood Materials. So far this year, there have been over 96,000 layoffs in tech, according to data from Trueup. The layoffs seem to be moving at a faster rate than last year — over 245,000 workers in tech were let go in 2025.

In March alone, more than 38,000 employees were let go from their jobs across tech, including companies like Oracle, Eidos Montreal, Meta and Epic Games. (The video game industry continues to be particularly hard hit.) At least four of the companies below have laid off employees due to increased spending in AI.

We'll get into the reason for the layoffs below. Note that while this report currently starts in late March 2026, we may backfill news from earlier in the year in a future update.
