Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around abbreviations that have multiple meanings, particularly within scientific, medical, and general contexts. Participants share examples of abbreviations and their various interpretations, exploring the implications of such multiplicity in communication.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that "DFT" can refer to discrete Fourier transform, density functional theory, or double field theory, all relevant in physics.
  • Others provide examples like "SOB" for shortness of breath and its more profane meaning, as well as "ALOC" for altered level of consciousness and air line of communication.
  • One participant mentions "HVAC" as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and questions the commonality of its alternative meaning as high voltage alternating current.
  • Another participant lists "ABC" as having multiple meanings in medical and governmental contexts, and also includes broadcasting organizations.
  • One contribution humorously contrasts "SAA" for South African Airways with "Society Against Abbreviations," noting the irony.
  • Participants introduce "TLA" with various meanings, including Texas Library Association and Three Letter Acronym.
  • Another participant shares "ADD" for acceptable daily dose and attention deficit disorder, while also referencing "AD&D" for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Several posts express frustration with redundancies in acronyms, particularly with "PIN" and "ATM," highlighting common misunderstandings.
  • One participant mentions a Canadian utility company named H2O4U as an example of creative abbreviation.
  • Another suggests using acronymfinder.com to explore the numerous meanings of abbreviations, citing "ABC" as having 357 listed interpretations.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally share examples and express similar frustrations regarding the ambiguity of abbreviations, but no consensus is reached on the implications or solutions to the issue.

Contextual Notes

Some abbreviations may have context-specific meanings that are not universally recognized, and the discussion does not resolve the potential for confusion arising from multiple interpretations.

DFT = discrete Fourier transform / density functional theory / double field theory

This example has 3 meanings, all of which are relevant for a single science (in this case, physics).

Can someone do better? (Artificial abbreviations which are not in actual use are not allowed.)

SOB -- Medical term (shortness of breath) and the other more profane meaning...

ALOC -- Medical (altered level of consciousness) and Military (air line of communication)

Puny ##27^3 =19683## abbreviations against a few billion people trying to shorten word combos; . Maybe we need to consider 4-letter abbreviations to take the total to 531441 options?

EDIT: It was actually SAUNA: http://www.acronymfinder.com/Society-Against-Unnecessary-Acronyms-(SAUNA).html

I almost asked a cashier out because she used the terms PIN and ATM, _without_ redundant redundance ;).

Whenever I see an acronym I don't know, I go to www.acronymfinder.com. Most of the time, there are lots of possibilities, for instance:
