AI Thread Summary
There are approximately 169 active volcanoes in the United States and its territories, with most exhibiting low activity levels and a low likelihood of eruption. Notable volcanoes currently under observation include Kilauea and Great Sitkin, both at an Advisory Level of WATCH and Aviation Color Code ORANGE, indicating ongoing activity. Kilauea recently experienced a brief eruption episode, while Great Sitkin shows slow lava eruption and minor seismic activity. Other volcanoes of concern include Ahyi Seamount, which is at an Advisory Level of YELLOW, indicating low-level unrest, and Mount Spurr, also at YELLOW, with elevated seismicity. The Axial Seamount, located off the Oregon coast, is showing signs of potential eruption, with researchers suggesting it may erupt before the end of 2025. The discussion highlights the differences in eruption styles among various volcanoes, including the unique characteristics of shield volcanoes like Axial Seamount.

I've seen stories recently in the media about active volcanoes in the US and its territories.

There are about 169 active volcanoes in the US and its territories, but most have low levels of activity and are unlikely to 'erupt'. Some however are erupting or likely to erupt in the near future.

Kilauea Advisory Level = WATCH Aviation Color Code = ORANGE. As of 2025-05-12 19:35:54 UTC, HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - Episode 21 ended at 08:36 p.m. HST on Sunday, May 11, 2025, after 7 hours 51 minutes of sustained fountaining. The Halema'uma'u eruption is currently paused. Change to current status on 2024-12-23 16:43:22 UTC from Alert Level WARNING and Aviation Color Code RED

Great Sitkin Advisory Level = WATCH Aviation Color Code = ORANGE. As of 2025-05-12 19:07:04 UTC, AVO Great Sitkin ORANGE/WATCH - Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues, accompanied by occasional small earthquakes. Change to current status on 2021-07-23 22:25:55 UTC from Alert Level ADVISORY and Aviation Color Code YELLOW

Three others potentially to erupt are Ahyi (in the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory) and the Axial Seamount (off the coast of Oregon).
Ahyi Seamount Advisory Level = ADVISORY Aviation Color Code = YELLOW. As of 2025-05-08 23:30:54 UTC, NMI Ahyi Seamount YELLOW/ADVISORY - Low-level unrest likely continues. Change to current status on 2024-11-19 23:43:33 UTC from Alert Level UNASSIGNED and Aviation Color Code UNASSIGNED

In the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, there is Mount Spurr
Spurr Advisory Level = ADVISORY Aviation Color Code = YELLOW. As of 2025-05-12 19:07:04 UTC, AVO Spurr YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest persists at Mount Spurr. Seismicity remains elevated. Change to current status on 2024-10-16 20:07:39 UTC from Alert Level NORMAL and Aviation Color Code GREEN

The Axial Seamount (Northern Pacific Ocean, off Oregon Coast)
Three hundred miles off the coast of Oregon and more than 4,900 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, one of the Pacific Northwest’s least famous — but most active — volcanoes is showing signs that it will soon erupt for the first time since 2015.

In December of 2024, researchers at the annual American Geophysical Union conference shared some exciting news: Axial Seamount was well on its way to an eruption, possibly before the end of 2025.

I am only concerned about those two specific chambers of 10,000 km³ and 46,000 km³ magma. Does it count as active? It does in Germany. Hawaiian volcanoes erupt slowly and always, so they do not really bother me. It is a bit like in Italy, where everybody thinks about the Vesuvius while the Phlegrean Fields are the real danger.

Axial Seamount is a shield volcano. They erupt differently. Is there a danger of a tsunami?
