Ansys Tensile Test: Troubleshooting Elongation

SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on troubleshooting a tensile test model in ANSYS for a composite coupon with specific dimensions (width: 0.5", height: 9", thickness: 0.16"). The user implemented a symmetry boundary condition on the bottom edge and applied a pressure load of 5000 on the top edge. However, the model only exhibits elongation in the Y direction without the expected thinning in the middle. The issue persists even when testing with a circular full section bar, indicating a potential limitation in the material model or boundary conditions used.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of ANSYS software and its modeling capabilities
  • Familiarity with composite material properties and non-linear material behavior
  • Knowledge of boundary conditions and loading scenarios in finite element analysis
  • Experience with tensile testing and its expected outcomes
NEXT STEPS
  • Investigate the implementation of non-linear material models in ANSYS
  • Learn about advanced boundary condition setups in ANSYS for tensile testing
  • Research the effects of mesh refinement on model accuracy in ANSYS
  • Explore the use of the ANSYS Workbench for composite material simulations
USEFUL FOR

I am trying to create a model in ansys for a composite coupon with a width of .5", height of 9", and thickness of .16". I have input my own material library file with my material data and I am having trouble getting the model to thin at the middle like a tensile specimine would normally do.

I used Symmetry B.C on the bottom edge of the area, and a pressure load of 5000 on the top edge of the area. Whenever I solve the model and look at the Deformed part, it is only elongated in the Y direction.

Any help is appreciated.

We tried to do the same thing with a circular full section bar, fixed on one side and with traction applied on the other side.
Obviously a non linear material it was used, with a typical steel sigma epsilon curve.
What we noticed it is only a thinning on the fixed side, but not in the middle of the model.
