SUMMARY

The discussion centers on sourcing a DC motor in the 3-3.5kW, 12-24V range, preferably 24V, for short bursts of power. The user seeks a lightweight and inexpensive starter motor without a gearbox or solenoid, ideally under $100. While starter motors are identified as suitable candidates, their prices typically range from $100 to $200, making them less accessible. The user also inquires about common vehicles that might provide used starter motors fitting these specifications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of DC motor specifications, including power ratings and voltage ranges.
  • Familiarity with starter motors and their applications in vehicles.
  • Knowledge of sourcing components from automotive scrapyards.
  • Basic understanding of torque and reliability requirements for motor applications.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research DC motors in the 3-3.5kW range suitable for short-duration applications.
  • Investigate local truck scrapyards for used starter motors that meet the desired specifications.
  • Explore online marketplaces for affordable starter motors without gearboxes or solenoids.
  • Learn about the torque characteristics of starter motors from various vehicle models.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for hobbyists, automotive engineers, and DIY enthusiasts looking to source affordable DC motors for projects requiring short bursts of power, particularly those interested in starter motors and automotive components.

I'm trying to find a DC motor in the 3-3.5kW 12-24V range (Preferably 24V) for a project that will utilize the motor at maximum power for occasional short bursts of maybe 2-3 seconds in duration at most. The motor needs to be fairly small, lightweight, and CHEAP ($100 or less). Starter motors exactly fit what I am looking for, but are still kind of pricey ($100-200). Does anyone know of a good source that sells starter motors or an equivalent without the gearbox/solenoid/etc in the price range I am looking? The RPM range is not very important, but the higher RPM the better. Also, brush/magnet types are not important either.

If not, what about a common vehicle that uses a starter with those specs that I could source used starters from?

Thanks!

Truck scrapyard.

In any event, expecting a motor which can offer the torque and reliability of a starter motor for under $100 is pretty unreasonably.
