Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the job market for physicists, specifically focusing on salary expectations and the potential for high-paying positions within the field. Participants explore various career paths, including academia and medical physics, and express differing views on the financial prospects associated with a physics degree.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that many physicists in the USA can earn six-figure salaries, while others argue that those salaries often come from roles outside of traditional physics work.
  • One participant mentions that $80,000 is a good salary, but others suggest that it may not reflect the effort and difficulty of the physics discipline compared to other fields with higher starting wages.
  • Medical physicists are discussed, with varying claims about their average salaries, with some stating it could be around $300,000, while others suggest it is closer to $150,000 or less.
  • Concerns are raised about the accuracy of salary figures presented by participants, particularly regarding the distinction between medical physicists and medical doctors.
  • Participants express differing opinions on the value of pursuing a physics career for financial gain, with some emphasizing job satisfaction over salary.
  • One participant shares their personal experience of taking several years to reach a six-figure salary after completing their PhD, highlighting the importance of making oneself indispensable in a company.
  • There is a suggestion that positions in private industry, such as in the drug industry, may offer well-paying opportunities for physicists.
  • Some participants note that while physics may not lead to extreme wealth, it can provide a comfortable living, especially with diverse and applicable skills.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the salary expectations for physicists, with multiple competing views on the financial viability of pursuing a career in physics. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the accuracy of salary figures and the overall job market for physicists.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include varying definitions of "rich," differences in salary expectations based on career paths, and the potential for exaggeration in reported salaries. The discussion also reflects personal experiences that may not be representative of the broader job market.

If you're wondering about money and things like that you really ought to rethink your goals and what you're studying.

As usual, this is really bad advice. While it may be true that going into physics only for the money (who does that, anyways?) is inadvisable, considering financial factors once you are in the field is prudent, reasonable and responsible.

In Australia entry level electrical engineers can start on 70k package. Experienced graduates can start on 100k.

Once the olympic dam construction begin in south australia it could become commonplace for good engineering graduates to see six figures straight out of school.

There really is a shortage and salaries have been around $65,000 starting for a while.

They're only going to get higher in the medium term.
