Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the inquiry into degree programs in astrophysics and cosmology available in the United States, particularly focusing on undergraduate options and the relevance of these fields in relation to career prospects.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses curiosity about which schools offer degrees in astrophysics or cosmology in the US.
  • Another participant notes that cosmology is typically offered as a couple of classes rather than a major at the undergraduate level.
  • This participant also mentions that few schools provide a major in astrophysics, suggesting that it may not be particularly useful for job prospects.
  • It is stated that most jobs in the field require a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics, which in turn necessitates a physics major for admission into graduate programs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on specific schools or programs, and there is a lack of agreement on the utility of astrophysics or cosmology as standalone majors.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not address specific schools or programs, and assumptions about the necessity of a physics major for graduate studies are presented without further elaboration.

I'm curious what schools should I look into for a degree in astrophysics or cosmology? Preferably in the US

I'm interested in buying a car. What car should I buy?

According to your previous posts, you're in the US and enrolled in community college. So I assume you're asking about a bachelors degree. Cosmology is one class, maybe two at the undergrad level. It's not a major. Few schools offer a major in astrophysics simply because it's not useful (same for astronomy). Pretty much all the jobs in the field require a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics, and those graduate programs require a physics major.

Okay, thanks
