Astrophysics research at ISRO in India?

Click For Summary
The discussion centers on the status of theoretical astrophysics research within ISRO, highlighting a perceived lack of focus on pure astrophysics compared to engineering achievements. The inquiry emphasizes a desire for a dedicated research environment similar to NASA's. It is noted that the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, which operates under the Department of Space, is more aligned with fundamental and theoretical research. In contrast, ISRO primarily concentrates on technology development and practical applications, which explains the limited visibility of astrophysics research in ISRO's public communications.

TL;DR Summary: Theoretical astrophysics research status in ISRO, India

I am from India and want to be an astrophysicist serving my nation. Whenever I check about any ISRO news, it is always about some engineering achievements, like the launch vehicle and never about pure theoretical research in astrophysics and cosmology, despite its name. This concerns me as I belong from a science branch.
So I wanted to ask, is there a well-built room in ISRO for a position of proper astrophysics research, as they have in NASA? Please help!

The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) at Ahmedabad is a unit of the Department of Space (of which ISRO is also a part).

PRL is more focused on fundamental/theoretical research, whereas ISRO is more about technology development and applications, as you have already noticed from news.

Thank You for the guidance. Much appreciated!

For some background, I'm currently a 3rd year physics major with an astro specialization studying in Canada, and as undergraduates are want to do I'm regularly evaluating my career prospects down the road. I also plan on pursuing grad school when I've completed my degree. It might just be my anxiety acting up a little, but with a lot of the government funding drying up for public science research broadly in the US, the 'industry' everyone keeps talking about when questions like this are...
