I think after one learns mechanics (calculus based) it is fine. After intro EM even better.

Whats nice about SR is that it doesnt require deep mathematics to get to some interesting physics. Only the ability to think. ie., high algebra/trig will get you far.

Using Wheeler: Space Time Physics as a start to designing such a course.
